Well, if by next weekend my clutch adjustment doesn't get my car driveable again, I will be selling it . I don't have the money for the kit or the labor, or the time and skill to do it myself. Sadly I'll be leaving the P-car world for a while...but I will return. I love these cars, I'm just not in the financial situation anymore if my clutch needs done.

So looking onward...I'm considering a VW Corrado. I know they have their issues too, but parts for VW's can be interchanged between a few other more common VW's which is a nice find. Parts are generally cheaper than for the 924's from what I've seen just browsing around lately. They have a decent online community too.

The G60's have that weak supercharger to deal with.

The SLC' with the VR6 motor have a head gasket, and interference engines to deal with too.

I like the idea of a Corrado because they're much more modern, small, sporty, but still quite practical. I'm not however interested in the aftermarket looks department on them, other than wheels if they've got some crap ones on it. The stock SLCs' look great IMO.

What are some of your opinions on the Corrado? I know gohim bashed them about their weakness's in a real old thread on this same car a while back in here. I just thought I'd get a few suggestions as I'm into the VW family, and possibly Audi's.

I don't remember exactly bashing the Corrado, both my brother had them. And, both my brothers both rid of them because replacing the G60 cost VW between $2500-$3500 each time that the G60s in my brothers' cars died.

On time my older brother got a new engine because when the G60 grenaded it shot metal particles through the entire engine oil system.

And now the newest G60 Corrados are well over 7 seven years old, and VW has abandon the G60, and it's associated parts. When your G60 dies (and it will every 20K-25K miles) you will be looking at $1500-$2000 if yours can be rebuilt by an aftermarket company.

From what I understand the VR6 has a rubber timing belt, and the same type of maintenance problems as the 944.

The Corrado weighs more than a late model 944, and has the same hp.

If you can't afford the maintenance on a early, simple 924, how are you going to afford the maintenance on any Corrado?

You would be better off sticking with your 924, or moving to a Honda or Toyota of some sort if you can't afford maintenance.

I've seen a few g60s Corrados with the 1.8t engine installed... probably a good idea. Front wheel drive still sucks though

I'm pretty sure the Vr6 has a timing chain not a timing belt. You still have to change the timing chain or at least check it and change the idler every 90k miles or close to that.

changing the timing chain on the vr6 will cost a lot in labour.....the transmission has to be dropped to get to replace the timing chains.

alot of people never change the timing chain on their vr6 motor because it costs a lot and some people think that timing chains don't need to be replaced.

vr6 is suppose to be a reliable motor though.

a vw corrado will cost way more than a 924 to fix. Also they are pretty old so I'm not sure how reliable they are.

I was thinking of getting a vw corrado vr6 or a newer vw gti vr6 for my next car aswell or a 944. Now I think the 944 is cheaper to fix and easier to work on but I might be totally wrong.

I don't know anything about the g60 the vr6 corrado seems to be more common.

for the VR6
here super charge the VR6 and you'll get a ton of power.

neuspeed made a pully kit to bring the hp up to 190-200, pully, fuel regulator
here
it also the 1.8L so their are a lot of upgrades for the car. i have a jetta with a 1.8 NA, i wish it was superchargered

the supercharger kits for the vr6 are too expensive....I've seen them for 2500+ plus you'd have to get it installed.

the vr6 engine is suppose to be strong but I see a lot of vws with failed transmissions so that might be a problem.

and yeah front wheel drive sucks a lot of people like the 1.8t better than the vr6 because the vr6 weighs a lot and on the front wheels it makes the handling not that great.

Dont think that if its a VW parts for it will be cheap....for the G60 parts are very rare and expensive...at least in this part of the world....a friend has a G60...his supercharger broke a year ago...he is still using the car without the SC...could not find one(his is preety shot)

The VR6 is a great engine and a nice looking and sounding car. The problem with the VR6 is interfearence and fuel consumption....also the parts for the VR6 are way more expensive than the G60...and they have a lot of different stuff...its like 924 and 944. I know a guy with a Passat VR6 that had a...interfearence problem lately...the tightner broke and the valves went pieces in the chamber...making hudge holes in the cyls walls.

However..they are not rust proof...so look for clean chasies when you buy one.

I was thinking about the VR6 for the reason of the G60's supercharger. And I am also not interested in doing engine mods whatsoever. Maybe some suspension mods if cash ever provided but I doubt it.

The VR6's do run on dual timing chains. I've been trying to find info on the exact procedure of certain repairs to see how some of those work and if I'd be able to do them.

The VR6 is a very common engine in VW's so parts would be less expensive to find second hand right?

might not help you that much, but have you looked into a MKII golf GTI 1.8 16v? i sold mine to get money to get my 924 up and running (argh! i miss that car! ) and it was just great, cornered really well and even did a little 3 wheel motion if i cornered hard enough
either way, wonderful cars. best of luck

Don't know much about the Corrado myself. Interesting looking cars but not as good looking as the 924, IMHO.

But front-wheel drive?! Good Lord, man, what are you thinking?!

I take it they're a bit newer than the 924? They look mid- to late-eighties to me.

C'mon, though, front-wheel drive?!

I'm guessing they're a bit more powerful than a 924. What are they, up around the 200hp mark?

Sheesh, front-wheel drive, though...

what other choice do you have if you want a cheapish car with rear wheel drive and good power? maybe a mustang or camaro but they're super ugly.

I'm not terribly interested in engine performance, though they respond decently to some mods. Their handling is suppoused to be great, even for a front wheel drive car. I'd like the front wheel drive for the winter if I have to drive it in the snow somewhat, at the moment I'm not sure of the fate of my Toyota pickup either .

The Corrados were made from 1990-1994 in the US, they're a much more modern, and practical car for year round than the 924 is. I've been looking around, after finals I'll try to find one in the area to test drive and see what they're about.

I have been considering other VW's, but this one looks like the most fun while still being practical.
