|
|
Ok, well my mild oil leak has suddenly accelerated over the past couple weeks, I'm no longer driving the car until I get the time to look into this. I have a feeling it's not good.
It used to be just a slow drip only after the car had been running and parked, overnight I'd see two drops. There's a lot more that comes out after it's been running.
What I do know:
It's coming from the rear left of the engine.
It's not the distributor drive gasket area, that's pretty clean, it's lower than that.
The starter area has a lot on it.
It seems like it's in the area of the cylinder 4 exhaust manifold area down towards the head gasket?!
The oil is clean on the dip stick, no coolant mixing.
The coolant is clean, temps are perfect.
Oil pressure is good at startup, and good at running temp.
I've got 20w50 in it, Mobil 1.
Changed the oil and filter in June.
About 1,500-2,000 miles since then(odometer wasn't working for the first half of the summer).
So, any ideas or suggestions? In the next week I'll be pretty busy, but in a couple weeks I should have the time to get out there and get busy if I can figure out what needs done. As always, thanks in advance. _________________ Mike

On that sender, would I be able to replace a gasket on it? Or should I just do them both...it reads just fine, and $80 is quite a bit.
Heh, Leadfoot I saw your post way back when I was searching about this with the filter elbow. Mine are just plain filters, so no elbow. _________________ Mike

have you tightened the oil filter?
i use synthetic oil and my filter comes loose, and i have the right size filter and everything, even when tight i get the same 2 or so drops. whenever i am under the car(which is at least twice a month) i tighten the oil filter. _________________ late 1979 porche 924, red 2.0l NA 5speed snailshell

How about the valve cover gasket. It can leak alot of oil. _________________ 80 924

I was thinking valve cover gasket though Ill add have you done any
other work to the car besides change the filter. If so retrace your steps.
No I wouldnt change the sender just the crush gasket. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

Alt_racer: I'll check the oil filter, but it's dry all the way around, it'll get some oil on it after driving just from the dripped stuff getting carried everywhere.
Kaffine: I've actually got the valve cover gaskets on my shelf...but I've been waiting for about a week for my oiler elbow to come in . When that shows up I'll be adjusting the lifters and changing those two. The front "arc" seal on the cam seeps just a little bit, but it's not enough to drip, and the rear is fine. It'll probably be trashed pulling the valve cover though.
Joes: We did the starter, but that was about 4 months ago, just swapped in a different one that I put a rebuilt solenoid on. I did the timing belt once about a month ago, it wasn't tensioned quite right so the belt was loosing material. Replaced that again and it's been perfect.
Other than that it's just been the oil, exhaust(from cat back), brakes and suspension work. Nothing recent that would have set this off that I can think of. _________________ Mike

IIRC the oil sender screws dircetly into the back of the head and only uses a copper crush washer like the oil drain plug to seal...

Well ok, today I finally got some time to pull the valve cover, adjust my valve clearances, and pulled the distributor drive housing to get a better look, or reach at the oil pressure sender...the distributor drive housing is fine, no leaks, the oil pressure sender is fine, no leaks.
So this means it's the headgasket? Sigh. My oil and coolant are great though, no contamination. Is it possible for the rear of the head gasket to leak? Any input? _________________ Mike

Try retightening your head bolts. Then do a compression test. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"

Back them off a bit and then torque them back down to spec? I've never done a compression test before, where could I find the instrument to do that with? _________________ Mike

I'd just set the torque wrench to the correct value and follow the tightening sequence to see if any are loose. If you find one that's loose, you may get lucky by retightening it, but in most cases you'll need a new head gasket.
On our cars you will need a compression gauge with a screw in hose. Most car parts stores will have one. _________________ White 87 924S "Ghost"
