A friend of mine has a 931 I am maybe interested in buying, but he lives about 200 miles away. The car is not running right now and I was wondering if it would be safe to just put the car on a uhaul dolly and tow it back to where I live, since it is a 5 speed and I can just put the car in neutral for the ride back....any chance this will cause damage to the trans doing this? Or would I have to also disconnect the driveshaft for some reason? Thanks in advance.

i towed cars for 350 Km and they were just fine...you dont need to disconnect anything...just put it in neutral and tow it with legal towing designated gear.

I picked my 931 up (1980 w/ M030 package, could be slightly lower than standard package) and towed it about 50 miles with a u-haul dolly. The ends of the ramps will rub under the sills on bumps. There was only some paint damage to mine, but a longer and/or bumpy-er journey could have meant bent metal. Maybe other dollys work, but I would only recommend using a flat-bed.

I flat bed my car every year from storage. I wouldn't want it to get hit by cars blasting through intersections thinking there's only a truck going through then WHAM!!!!!!!!!

Or, curbing a wheel going around a turn, or the rumors about towing the cars on dollies

If you can get the steering wheel to lock in the straight ahead position, then you can put the rear wheels on the dolly, and tow the car backward. That should solve the clearance problem, unless you are going to drive over curbs.

Make sure you have that steering wheel secure! I can only imagine the damage that would occure if the front wheels were to be dragged for the whole trip!

Depending on the dolly, the front spoiler may rub if you pull the car backwards.

I've used a tow dolly several times. All of them said to tow only with the front wheels in the dolly, which is what I did.

By the way, for those of you that have towed your 924 with a dolly before, what was the fastest you can safely drive? Uhaul says 45mph......ugghhhh!
