The Seller who told you your 78 924 had a VW tranny in it was pulling your leg, or uniformed. The 78 924 would have come with a 4-speed transmission originally designed by Audi, and redesigned to work in the 924. There was a 5-speed version of this transmission that was made available in the 924 starting in 1980. In 1979 there was an optional 5-speed transmission with Porsche origins that was offered for 924s.

Undoubtedly if you car was converted to a 5-speed, he was referring to installing the Audi based 5-speed in your 1978 car (which is an easy conversion).

The front wheel drive tranny from a Rabbit is not installable in a rear wheel drive 924.
