Should 924 motors get synthetic motor oil or not?

I have a 924 NA motor and I was wondering if I should use synthetic or non synthetic motor oil.

My car was born on and raised with non synthetic and still suckles the teat of the non synthetic boobie. Now that my baby is 29 years old, 5 years older than me, I have questions.

Should I switch over to synthetic or not?

I have learned that synthetic is greater at protecting and lasts longer which doesn't matter to me. I have oil changes about every 2,000kms with NON and if I switch I would probably just put new SYN in the spring and leave it all year aprox. 5,000 kms.

Anyway the only down side that I know of for SYN is that it is thinner {which helps in cold weather} and in older engines it can leak out in places where NON can't and also pass pistons {worn engine and all} where NON can't.

If SYN starts bypassing the rings and I start getting smoke and whatnot, can I switch back to NON right away and have the engine go back to the way it was?

Also, if I do switch, what would be the best brand to buy and should I make the switch slowly by mixing NON with SYN in small doses, or just swap in SYN at the next oil change?

Thanks.

When not rebuilt engine, I would (and I do on my wifes N/A) use semi-synth. 10W-40 Motul, very good oil (but a bit pricey too). On a turbo engine, synthetic of course, but synthetic oil means that you have to have rebuilt engine. No point in pouring full synth into old engine, it will leak and have lower oil pressure, in worst cases may couse oil passage clogging.

obviously I'm no expert but my opinion is:

theres no point in switching to synthetic oil with an old high milliage (I'm assuming) engine. If you're not racing and driving in extreme conditions reg oil is fine.

switching to synthetic I've been told will start leaks through your old gaskets.

Also the synthetic oils have a benefit of keeping the engine cleaner, but if you switch now there is still sludge and crap left over from using regular oil for 29 years so it won't really help with that.

if you have a rebuilt engine I would use synthetic, it doesn't really cost more than regular oil as you change it less and it'll keep the engine cleaner and less wear.

I've heard mobil-1 is the best.

Royal Purple fully synthetic!!! 10W 30. Noticable increase in power! Stopped burning oil. Much better than non-synthetic.
