Kicked off the project today, as it was rather warm - 40 deg and rainy in Detroit! Got the exhaust, driveshafts, and rear suspension out. All that remains to be removed is the trans (already drained), torque tube (I'll pull them as a unit) and bellhousing.

Then it'll be new clutch, manual bellhousing, etc etc...

I'll post updates as she goes...

Did you cure the engine yet?

If so, what was the problem?

I think it's the drag from the shredded rubber mess in there; I also experienced it after I got it home and reassembled it, just would stall out, but ran fine with a little gas.

Also found, while I was under there, that I need to replace the heater control valve - it's leaked all over the bellhousing. The O2 sensor probably needs to be replaced, doesn't look like it's ever been out. The rear shocks look original too. And then all the usual bits...

Sounds cool man. I want to convert my auto to a manual too, but frankly don't have the skill to do it. And, I have a feeling I'd be charged a small fortune if I took it somewhere else.

Keep updating!

The grounds under the heater valve are notorious causes of running problems...

Major update... I got a clutch. Yeah, that's it. I'm home again, but recovering still from some hockey damage... might work on it again this coming weekend if I have energy and it's warm enough (iffy). If so, I start actually removing the trans and torque tube. Since the rubber disc is shredded, that should be amusing - not sure if I even need to bother with the pinch bolt on that one!

Clutch kit was about $400 off of eBay, factory Sachs kit... This was from Gripforce clutches:
http://stores.ebay.com/gripforce-com

No affiliations, service was good and prompt, happy with the product.

I'm also awaiting arrival of used parts to swap in the manual bellhousing and ring gear... as well as needing a few new manual parts (like clutch guide tube, pilot bearing, etc)...

Just remove the bell housing and torque tube in one piece, (just remove the starter and the bolts that hold the damper to the flywheel, then undo the bell housing bolts.)

I'd probably remove the rear suspension and drop the tranny, TT and bell housing as a single assembly.

Good point... normally I do the trans and TT together, but leave the bellhousing, yet in this case it may be simpler to do it all together... not to mention not having to slide the whole mess backwards. Rear susp is already out...

The bell housing must be slid back to undo the E clip on the end of the input shaft before the torque tube can be removed, so its easier to just remove the bell housing, TT, and tranny as one.

The reference mark sensors must be removed before the bell housing can be removed, however.

This is only true for the auto setup, right? Irritating.

Yeah, I've heard it's expensive to forget that step...

Just a quick update; I recieved the new rubber damper yesterday, so the conversion project is officially over. I'll be pulling the trans and torque tube, possibly this weekend, and it'll be getting repaired as an automatic 924S.

It's just too pretty to start chopping up...

So it'll be getting put on the block later this year, once I've gotten it debugged and enjoyed it a little...
