Gracie and I just picked up a '77 924 - purportedly for parts, since we need some internals for the 931 - which we will be keeping and fixing, thanks to the generosity of a couple of 924Board members and today's dealings.

Until today I just didn't get why 924 fans were so rabid about their cars.

But this afternoon I drove one for the first time. A toofah - not a 931 which has more in common with the 944. I don't think I've ever met a car that was so darn charming! Just sweet and cute in so many ways. I hate cute!!!!!

So we've got a 1977 924 automatic that had been bought by a buddy as a parts car for his wife's project. But the farther we got into this car, the more we felt it could be saved. And, of course, Gracie's logic of having a 924 to bomb around in while the 931 got rebuilt was perfectly logical. She felt sorry for the 924, being slow and gutless and all. And our Premier, Mr. Ralph Klein, thoughtfully provided every Albertan with $400 just for living here. I kid you not. So $600 later we've got some more entertainment for the shop. So in one corner of the shop I'll be building an engine and in the other I'll be painting a 924. Gracie's good at interior stuff so she gets that bit. The 931 looks great - this one will, too.

The car itself shows signs of having been cared for mechanically. The body's a mess (no rust, though) but the fuel filter's new, plug wires are new, plugs new, intake boots new, water pump quiet, alternator quiet, engine's clean, no fuel leaks, no coolant leaks, new muffler, e-brake holds, tranny's tight, runs rough (for a thirty-year-old car what's rough?), tires are new and it moves at the pace of a snail on valium. And it's just so damn cute!!!!! I hate that! But handles so well - light and fluffy.

Timing belt tensioner sounds like it's juggling marbles but we've got a new one of those, plus a timing belt. And the joy of knowing your valves are safe if the belt gets left behind! What a load off!

Now then, aside from all the standard tune-up stuff, I wanna drop the pan and do the rod bearings very soon (once bitten...) and adjust the valves, have a peek at the wheel bearings and the brakes all round, do a tranny service...and what else should I look for? The car passed a safety in September /05, BTW, so it hasn't been a derelict.

The Porsches are piling up around here... I think I'll open a used P-car shop called The Infirmary.

Yes, khal, teller of stories, how did the term "toofah" come about? More than just Oz accent? And how's your head gasket situation? I did the one on my 944 last summer. Piece of cake for that car, but for the 931 with its manifolds and stuff - what a bitch...

You know guys, speed isn't everything. Well, maybe it is, but until the turbo is fixed Slam can be comforted by the fact that his wife will never be able to do stunting or racing or speeding while driving the automatic 924. The 924 is aperfect addition to our household as I have a bit of a leadfoot. The local law enforcement has ceased to pull me over for speeding, I've never gotten a ticket yet, and I'm sure I never will while driving the 924. The local law enforcement and I are on relatively good terms as they only ever pull me over after work (I manage a bar now so I leave work at 3 or 4 AM) and they know I'm not drunk so they warn me about deer and fog and snow and tell me if i'm going to speed home at 4 in the morning to at least watch out. But just think, they'll probably get a kick out of the new car! I should just drive it to the station and take them for a ride! Then they'll know it's me and they'll know how painfully slow it is and they will also be comforted by the fact that I will be safe, and they won't have to bother pulling me over. Regardless of the speed of the 924, I like it and I think it has pounds of potential.

Hey Gracie the auto may not be quick off the mark at the lights but get a chance to wind it up and it'll get some speed.

Well kids... A Long Time Ago, In A Galaxy Far, Far Away...

Actually, I'm not sure whether I was the first to use it or not? If I was, that's cool

A mate of mine went to university in Rockhampton, which is about 700-odd-km's North of Brisbane. He lived in Gladstone, which is just South of Rocky, about 40mins drive, IIRC.

Anyways, being the sort of party-hard people that Uni students are, they'd often find themselves in need of supplies at odd hours of the night. There was only one place that was open late at night, a 24-hour Mobil servo (gas station).

Being that Aussies are generally lazy speakers, it was decided somewhere along the line that, "want to got to the Mobil 24-hour service station?" was just too much of a mouthful and it was duly shortened to, "wanna go to the two-four?"

So whenever I'd visit my mate in Gladstone/Rocky, I'd just use the local the local term "two-four".

When I bought my 924 Turbo, I noticed that a lot of people called them twenty-fours or two-fours.

Being that I'm an extremely lazy speaker, and couldn't even be bothered pronouncing "four", it got shortened to "toofah".

And henceforth, me and my mates just called my car "the toofah".

It's gonna get replaced. Not sure whether some head work is needed yet. I'll know by next week.

Thanx Ozzie, that gives me a bit of hope. I can't wait to find a strip of road with no ice or snow on it so I can see what she can do. Slam and I test drove the 924 and had a blast, but it was a short bit of road and we were told not to go too far because the timing belt might walk off. We pick up the car this saturday, it's three hours from home so I hope it makes it. When we brought the turbo home it was through a blizzard, the car had no heat and there was freezing air coming in through the holes in the front of the car. That was an adventure! Freezing cold Canadian weather and a new car! Well, new to me. I can only hope that I get clear, dry roads on saturday, and that the 924 actually makes it home.

so why id you bother adding the "the".

Now I am confused. is it "the toofah" or just "toofah" or maybe even "da toofah", heck , better yet is "toof"!

In NY it means you 2 for every one you buy. As in buy 2 for a dollar and get one free. For a dollar you could almost buy 924s.
