Can anyone do a "How-to" about getting your keys out of your car if you lock them in..?

I did it this morning. Luckily I've got a spare set, so it wasn't a big drama.

But it got me thinking... how do you break into these things?

I can get into almost any pre-'90's Ford with a piece of packing tape
I use to keep a strip of it in my wallet but I've recently got a new wallet and haven't updated it with my "break'n enter" kit

I little known trick to breaking in cars
Used by repo guys and used car lots
You can bend back the top of the door with a pry bar, and use something to pop the lock, the doors have quite a bit of flex. You would be surprised. There is always the make shift slim jim too. 924/944 have realitively easy locks to pop.

If you happen to be in a 924 meeting when you lock yourself out, just get some keys from the other members and try them, one of them will work.
(It wasn't me...)

Mikri184's method of bending to top back a bit works too, at least if you have an already not so straight door.

My driver side door has previously had the lock broken(someone drove a flatheadscrewdriver into the lock, or some other flat object), so I just unlock it with a penny, or screwdriver, or thumbnail....

I did that a couple of times with my old car. I found a coat hanger and spent a long time and finally opened it.

my 924 driver side also opens with anything because I removed the key lock tumblers.

Of course I could always get my late fathers locksmithing equipment out of storage.
He had some picking equipment and it is not as quick as they show on TV crime shows to pick a lock. Easy enough but takes a while.

How did you manage that, Khal?

My driver's door can only be locked with the key. So, if yours is the same, you must've had the hatch open, locked your driver's door, thrown the keys in through the hatch and then slammed the hatch shut!

Am I right?

Close... but no cigar!

Nah, I opened the passenger door to pop the bonnet. Just threw the keys on the seat. But I must've leaned on the door and pushed the lock down... then I shut the door without looking

Good one.
I have learnt to always open a window when working on the car.
Many a time the central locking has activated- probably the alarm has rearmed and locked the doors while I am working under the bonnet.

another key cut from a generic blank saved me a couple of times when the brain was on holiday. Without all the plastic the key is not much thicker than a credit card and sits in the wallet nicely.

I already had a spare set in the house but just after I bought the car I was underneath checking brakes and fuel lines and found a spare key attached by wire to body.
