For all you non-believers out there, one of my favourite little sports cars has just taken out Wheels' Car Of The Year!
Yes, the MX-5/Miata really is that good. If you like the 924, I highly recommend taking an MX-5/Miata for a spin. They are nothing short of brilliant Better than a 924 in any measurable way.
And yes, if I had the money, I'd buy one. Unfortunately, even the oldest ones are still about 50-100% more expensive than a 924 here... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

The new MX-5 that the magazines are ranting about is not the same MX-5 that many people feel in love with when it was introduced.
The new MX-5 has grown another 4 inches wider and 2 inches longer.
No one will argue the the extra width was not needed. When the original MX-5 came out, I dragged my ex-wife down to the Mazda Dealer because I wanted to see and test drive the car that the magazines were all writing about.
Personally, I was disappointed with the car so much that I changed my plans to buy a new one immediately. I found that the iterior was a little too tight for me to relax in. The average size driver, and passenger sit in shoulder to wrist contact with each other. That's a little too close for spirited driving for me. I need room to work the steering wheel and shift lever.
Since then the MX-5 has grown wider and longer each time it has been revised. I saw one a couple of weeks ago at the LA Auto Show, and while still a little small, it's finally large enough for me to get reasonably comfortable inside.
The problem is, I prefer the BMZ Z3 from a driving standpoint. The seating position is better, the interior size is more comfortable, and there is lots of room under the hood to work on the engine. I also like the power band provided by several of the available BMW engines better than that of the MX-5. Still, I like the exterior styling of the original MX-5 slightly better than the Z3 and loads better than the new MX-5 or the Z4. While the new MX-5 has a more usable interior, I fear that the exterior has moved from the timeless and instant classic original body shape to one that is trendy, and probably due for a short time in fashion, much as the mistake that BMW has made with the Z4 body. |

Actually, it won the COTY award the year it was released, too And the award isn't given lightly, if anyone's thinking that. It's the oldest and most respected motoring award in the country. These guys aren't stupid...
I drove the first generation MX-5 and I loved it! It was the most fun thing I've ever driven! But I'm 5'8" so every sports car in the world fits me like a glove
I've never driven a Z3 but I always discounted them as a cynical marketing exercise. Never was a fan of the looks, either.
I love the look of the Z4. It's much sharper (pardon the pun) than the Z3. But I've not had the chance to drive one.
The MX-5 has always been a bit dull in the looks department, IMHO. But that's OK with me 'cause its just too much to drive
I can understand why some wouldn't like it. But surely 924 fans can appreciate it..? _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

same, it really is a chick car. I don't really like anything that is a convertible, that's why I don't really like the boxster
only Mazda I like were the latest rx7s I think 92+? I saw this twin turbo late model rx7 that looked really nice not sure if they sold a twin turbo model from factory. The rx8 is really bulky and ugly now. _________________ 78 924 sold.

You're joking right. All the WOTY (Whatever Of The Year) awards go to the highest bidder - it's a very fair system.
How many times have really innovative cars like the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon and Mitsubish Magna picked up a COTY.
The MX5 probably got it because it was "nice" and nobody else could be bothered putting in a bid. Either that or it had more cup holders than any other sports car which seems to be all that Wheels magazine is interested in these days. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)

Yeah, I'm a fan of the Series VII RX-7 twin-turbo beasties... they beat the Porsches five years running in the Bathurst 24-Hour enduro. Impressive machines.
I love the RX-8. Suicide doors, so cool. Apparently a little underpowered but, damn, it looks good to me

My, my... aren't we cynical? No, I'm not joking and no, I don't think they bid for the award.
My only complaint, if you could call it that, against the award is that it has a very, very strong value for money bias (plus some other technicalities like sales volumes) which means truly incredible cars, like the Bugatti Veyron for example, can never win. But I can appreciate why.

Not that many, suprisingly. In fact, they've witheld the award on at least two occasions 'cause the whole field of new cars was crap! But when they do win it's simply because, for the money, there's nothing better you can buy.
The only recent award I've had a real problem with is last years, which went to the Ford Territory. But that's a philisophical difference between me and most other people... I reckon the Territory is a truck and shouldn't be eligible.
Which car would you pick, Peter_in_AU? _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Can't remember exactly how many times the Boxster itself has taken out Motor Performance Car Of The Year. But Porsches have won it at least five times.
Same problem as Wheels Car Of The Year, though. There's a lot of emphasis on value. So cars like the 911 Turbo have virtually no chance because they're just too expensive here... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

I like what the miata is about. I like how they try to keep the weight down. I don't like the looks. I liked the second gen. somewhat. It looked sleek and muscular (a little bit). The first and current gen. just have no personality or soul to the look. I've driven a second gen. and I can't argue with the handling, and they are fun to drive, but feel is very important. The steering did not have the feel my 924 steering has. It also lacked rigidity. I could feel the chassis flexing when I would hit little bumps. This is somewhat unsettling. My 924 never does this. I'm sure it’s because it lacks the support of a solid roof. It’s a good little car, but I wouldn’t go out and buy one. _________________ 1980 Porsche 924 N/A USA

Saw a bright red 2006 MX-5 GT yesterday as a matter of fact.It was lowered and had some really nice aftermarket rims.Nice Friggen car.
I think the new added width of the Mk III's really makes a difference in the way the car looks.Way more of a platform to work on as far as aftermarket upgrades too.
I've been surfing the Miata boards for some time now and have found you can get a MKII car with a dry weight of 2000 lbs. and 250 bhp.with some awsome bolt on upgrades for not alot of money.
There's actually a 3 minute video of a guy joining his buddies at some track in Florida (?) on Porsche day. He's driving the above 2000 lb. car and wipes every other cars ass except for 2 GT-3s' ,and even those couldn't get him off thier tails !
Not usually something i'd post here but I really think they deserve some credit.Besides, they really are like 924's;not the fastest cars stock but relatively cheap, nicely balanced and a whole lotta fun to drive !
And for me that's all that counts ! _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

if you don't want it to look as girly, get this for it. I've wanted it for years but too expensive with the price of the car and painting.

Hmmm, I'll admit that I like that. I wouldn't try to badge it up to pass off as anything other than a kitted miata, but I think I well modified car with that body would be pretty sweet. _________________ Gone: 1981 silver 924 w/ black int. and a 5 speed. |
