...to pick up this:

1980 931 with 944 body kit. Car is in ID. Ray is trailering it down to SLC.
Arrive in SLC Friday PM, take delivery of vehicle
Sat, drive from SLC to Omaha
Sun, hook up with the Omaha crew for breakfast
Sun, drive from Omaha to Detroit.

Woohoo!

Let's hope we don't get any freeway-closing blizzards this weekend

Yeah, he's happy...'cept about havin' to drive thru a snowstorm. Friggin weather between Idaho Falls and SLC is not exactly cooperating right now. Just spoke to him on the phone a few moments ago...freeway is shutdown right now due to an overturned tractor trailer. Let's hope things are in much better shape tomorrow afternoon.

Be safe, Ray!

Well, we made it safely back from SLC to Detroit, but not without a little adventure along the way...but more on that later. First, the rundown on the car.
Snailshell tranny is nowhere near as bad Ray led me to believe...which is actually a great thing. As long as I don't downshift into first while the car is moving, and as long as I'm careful shifting into 2nd, there's no grinding at all. Tranny is actually the best dog leg I've driven. So that was a nice, pleasant surprise.

Windshield is cracked, but shouldn't have too much trouble finding a donor replacement.

Body work and paint is quite good. These are not FG panels...these are bonafide 944 parts, and the workmanship was actually quite good.
Mechanicals are all in pretty good order. Engine bay is nice and clean, even looks like the fuel dizzy may have been replaced or rebuilt at some point. Throttle body and intake were both replaced with a series II, which was another really nice surprise. Turbo smokes a little on startup, and there is a small oil leak from somewhere that I haven't had time to isolate, but otherwise, the engine seems to be very strong.

Car drives very nice, pulls good and strong, and suspension seems reasonably taught, although I need to adjust the rear ride height and/or replace the rear shocks.

Interior has some problems, but the Indiana car interior will get swapped into this car since the wide body is now going to be outfitted in race interior rather than stock. No surprise, but lots of electrical gremlins to chase down.

Odometer doesn't work, so we couldn't do actual mileage tests, but our estimates seem to indicate mileage rate of about 25-28 MPG, so we were pretty happy with that.

So Saturday night we stopped for our 3rd fillup, about 2 hours west of our destination for the night, Omaha. Shortly after getting back on the highway, a terrible squealing came from under the hood. We immediately pulled over, and darn it all of the water pump wasn't frozen solid! Fortunately, we pulled off on an exit that had a well-lit gas station and a Holiday Inn. Fortunately, the car never overheated and the battery didn't drain as we caught the problem immediately.

The hotel had a shuttle service, so after several phone calls with the Omaha crew, we were able to find a Budget rental with a 24' truck and car trailer. The shuttle took us up there, and we picked up the truck, and spent the night in the hotel. Next morning we get up, and the ignition in the truck was frozen, so we couldn't get it to start. We sprayed it with PB Blaster and went for breakfast at the hotel restaurant. By the time we finished, PB Blaster did it's trick and we were able to start the truck, load the car, and depart by 7 AM.

From there, we trailered the car to Jazzerpet's shop. Don Hook provided a rebuilt water pump and Tom Cooper provided a v-belt. Can't say enough good things about those boys in Omaha! Great, great bunch of guys. So we got the new waterpump installed in about two hours, ate some delicious hot chili, then got back on the road by 3 PM. This whole thing set us back by 3 hours, but we made it the rest of the way home without episode, arriving in my driveway a little before 2 AM this morning.

We averaged probably 90 MPH the whole way, and never encountered any cops. I only took the car up to 110, but she had plenty more power left. All in all, this car will make a very very nice addition to the stable.

Once again, thank you thank you thank you to the Omaha crew!

A few pics from the repairs:

Door Stop anyone?

Love that lic. plate. This is Dan and Larry, his co-pilot, on the right.

Car's a little dirty. Sorry Ray!

We took the 931 out for a test run and it felt like this:

Dan and Larry and two of the Omaha Crew, Jim on the left and Tom on the right.

We were very impressed with the work that Ray did on the wide body treatment of the 931 and the performance is great. And it's in good hands now.

We were happy to be able to help. And of course, if any other board members are ever in the area, you're always welcome to stop by, or call if you have car trouble. Always good to meet fellow 924 owners.

Nice one. Love it when a plan comes together, eh? (even if there's a minor detour along the way)

Good luck with the new beast!

Well, actually, Larry is my Rustang buddy from the Motor City, so Omaha still has claim to the three-letter-name capitol of the world
