Thanks to Ebay I am a new Porsche owner.

This was pretty much an impulse buy and I'm regretting it already with less than 24 hours gone as a Porsche owner.

This one has a huge water leak from the sunroof and it stinks inside as a result.

This car has the heaviest gearchange I've ever encountered. Kitcar builders have often described Porsche 'boxes as the heavy option but this is almost a two handed job to shift from 4th to 5th. Makes my Ford Galaxy seems like a slick shifting Race car. Finding reverse requires a search party.

Everybody wants a race "because its a Porsche" but I have little to answer with. Its quicker than my 1.0L Yaris but not by much.

Its eaten the alternator within a hundred miles of driving and the Haynes manual suggests taking the car to a dealer to get it fixed. I'm more tempted to drive it to my local scrapyard before the battery goes flat to save the world from this car.

....Welcome!

I think if you put a little time, and money into it you'll change your mind about the car, unless it is really that far gone. Good luck, search around, I'm sure the information on this forum can help some of your problems.

So you bought an old Porsche that wasn't taken care of and you didn't research the car at all and now you're mad?

Seems like that to me.

If you researched the car at all, you would have found that 924's have a 2.0 litre motor and they are also decades old.

What year is your car and is it a 924, 924S or a 931?

Also, water leaks in cars that are nearing 30 years old is a common issue with any make or model. Look at the newer Boxster's. They have water leaks from factory.

If you want assistance with your repairs eg: Where to buy parts or what is easily fixed etc.... Post your questions.

And buying anything used from the internet is a gamble.

for the sun roof leak: check if the drains are jammed. You can try to blow air in the pipes. If the sun roof is like on a vw, there is 4 hoses, one in each corner

for the sunroof leak you can clean the drain hoses with a weed wacker plastic line. put soap in there and put the line through to get the crap out and then wash it many times. then you probably need a new sunroof seal/ sunroof clips if they are broken.

the hatch could leak also if the holes are blocked like mine. and then the battery box may leak if it is rusted through which it probably is. I fixed mine with cold weld stuff/ por15 paint.

yeah if you buy a piece of crap 924 its cheaper to scrap it and buy a nicer one to start off. basicly doing any moderate rapair will cost more than the car's value.....

I'm used to buying cars on Ebay, this is number seven and I've yet to sell one for less than I've paid.

Who decided the best place for the handbrake was under the drivers door pocket ? Are they currently in Re-hab ?

Why is reverse harder to find than Keira Knightlys phone number ?

That said I quite enjoy low gears on twisty roads just as long as I dont need a quick downshift to overtake or fifth gear which almost needs two hands to select.

I'll search the forums for a bit to find answers as I'm sure these are not unique issues but I need a new sunroof seal and a new alternator

EDIT:
Its a 924 Lux, not an S or turbo or anything special.
I do fancy the idea of dropping a Rover V8 into it.
There was a Sierra on my drive for a while with a similar conversion that was a lot of fun and I have a spare V8 block in the garage. . . . . .

1. Why not? You shouldn't ever need it while driving.
2. Perhaps the gear box is worn out.

Simple questions need simple answers.

Eh ?
Sorry but this is good old England where we occasionally have to stop at traffic lights and junctions where its considered very bad manners to roll backwards into the car behind you.

I have a spare Rover gearbox too should I decide to do the engine swap.
The Porsche item seems a but unfriendly to use

Um... welcome... I think..?

You might enjoy this small article on the 924.

You might also enjoy the fact that the 924 made it into Richard Porter's book Crap Cars at number 49, in the company of such gems as the Datsun Sunny 120Y and Trabant!

On the plus side, for anyone with any experience with cars, they're pretty cheap and easy to fix.

>>>This one has a huge water leak from the sunroof and it stinks inside as a result.

This is usually an easy fix. Clogged drains, bad seal, etc...

>>>two handed job to shift from 4th to 5th.

This is not normal with the car. Something is wrong.

>>>Everybody wants a race "because its a Porsche"

If you bought it to race, you've got problems.

>>>Its eaten the alternator within a hundred miles... suggests taking the car to a dealer

Don't know why you would take it to a dealer for the alternator. This is neither expensive nor difficult to fix.

Hey there matey...

Alternator - eurocarparts or take it to be re-conditioned locally, I had mine done for about £50.

Handbrake, you get used to it and to be honest I prefer it to the normal central position, don't catch my clothes on it or anything...

No, 924's aren't the fastest thing on the road, but introduce some curves and they really do shine, I love nothing better than taking my old girl (and the car!) out on the Northumberland coastal route and throwing her around.

My sunroof leaks aswell, the seal is gone on mine but I never take the roof out so I just ran some vasoline around the edge then dropped it back in, messy but it did the job...

Ebay is littered with gems and coals that all go fro £5-800. As you can see below, I bought two 924s, both on ebay. I got the 82 first, viewed it before I bid but although it was fun, it was hassle. Real hassle. the second was only £200 more, and is as refined and smooth as when it came out the factory (maybe). Sure, everyone wants to race me too, but with 125HP and much of it getting back to the rear wheels, I find it is faster than a lot of cars, it will certainly kick a Yaris!

If you want to plant the V8 in it, great! I have seen a couple that are awesome. If you decide against it, you'd be better off financially getting another off ebay that you've looked at, driven and know what you're looking for (I'm sure you did your research anyway). On the other hand, there is no way to learn, like doing it all to the one you've got!!

Thanks for the welcome and first order of business is to apologise to any offended by my post so far. It was part frustration driven ranting and part asking for help.

I'll read the links given and have a poke around with the search button to cure its two major ailments which are sunroof seals/drain and the Alternator which is a traceable electrical fault. A heavy start out of a junction seemed to scare the alternator into a fit of the vapours from which it never recovered. I thought at the time it had shed the belt but it recovered a few sconds later leaving the red charge warning light on. I'm guessing its an engine earthing fault as lights and engine died at the same time.

I didnt buy it to make money and I've got a lot of car for a little money.

After looking around here I decided to haul the battery out and check the metalwork underneath and found it to be corroded but strong and salvageable with very little work. It would probably be a different story in a years time, rust rarely gives up once its started.
