After re-welding the muffler once myself and having it come apart again, My exhaust now seems to be cracked/leaking from just in front of the catalytic converter.

besides sounding like a NASCAR, It smells, and it's just not a great situation all around.

Since I'll have to do something about it, is there anything I can do to upgrade my exhaust, with something that sounds decent and is of good quality? Should I just take it to the muffler shop and try to get it patched up?

Also, I dont' want a loud exhaust, I have a loud exhaust. but a sporty tone would be fun.

78 non-turbo, manual transmission, I live in Michigan.

Pick up a used 944 exhaust system, it's a good upgrade for the 924 and all the bends are the same. You will have to chop off the end and adapt to the 924 flange IIRC.

Either that or you could chop off the downpipe before the two pipes merge, put on a better collector feeding into a 2.25" system and put a universal flange on the collector and the 944 system.

Or you could buy a Bursch system from Tweeks for about $260, which will bolt on with no fuss.

I have a new barely used (never seen the road) bursch exhaust with new cat (with flanges not a universal) that I can sell you. Pickup in Crown Point IN, to save you big bucks on shipping. I`m negotiable on price. Let me know if you have any interest.

If your car is a '78, do you even need a catalytic converter? I know in Ohio after it's 25 years old you can ditch it for a straight pipe? Or am I confused on something?

Thanks for the replies everybody.

I don't know if that 25 year thing is true for Michigan or not, but having a cat on there doesn't really bother me, and will probably make selling the car more simple if I ever want to do that.

jpab, I may be interested in that, I'll send you an email.

that 25yr thing in oh is if you tag your car as historical which restricts your usage of the car. must be a secondary car and driven less miles than primary car. if you want to restrict your driving even less w/ historical tags you can get special insurance also which will limit you to 3,000 miles or less/yr depending on insurance company. state farm is $85/yr full coverage.

as for performance i did a straight pipe for a short while as a test (didn't dyno to verify) but i seem to lose low end torque but seem to gain upper end hp. car was slower off the line but quicker in 60-100 mph range.

as for exhaust mods i cut the down pipe where it comes into one piece just past the o2 sensor welded in a 2.5" i.d. pipe. then took a universal fit cat. conv. for a 351 ford or 350 chevy truck with single tailpipe(2.5"o.d.)and bent my own pipe(2.5" i.d.) all the way back to the muffler(free flowing muffler). the sound is good not loud but a good throaty sound.

this set up seems to be i nice blend of the right flow and back pressure.

i also took off the restrictive tube on the air box with this combination my gas mileage has gone from 28-30 mpg on highway to 31-33mpg.

when i get a chance i'll post the part #'s for the cat. and muffler i used.

Yeah I drive my car on a daily basis so I want to keep regular tags on it.

Thanks everybody for your replies, I ended up buying that exhaust from jpab924 and just put it on last weekend. everything worked out great! thanks again.

Your right we don't need catalytics. We ohioans have it easy.
