Hi,
I'm fairly sure my 78' with a 4-speed gearbox has a few problems. The first problem is that when I shift into reverse I can hear the gears grinding until I push it slightly to the right for it to fully engage.
The second problem is that the gears feel sloppy, and having driven a manual c6 Corvette today I would love to have a clutch that feels like it is connected to something. The car is a bit of a mystery, with no records and a broken odometer so I'm not sure when the clutch was replaced or if it ever was.
Lastly, I have a question about what speeds to shift at. The 924 is no muscle car, but the car hits 3k rpm and sounds like it wants to shift into 4th around 40mph which seems quite low. Is this normal?
I'd like to resolve these issues soon, because I plan to take the car on the track by the end of decemeber and hopefully not make a fool out of myself or burn the clutch out.
Thanks. |

You may find yourself very disappointed comparing your car to a 'vette; any 'vette, or any part of a 'vette. Love it for what it is. Find another owner and compare notes. Drive another 924. My shift point is closer to 5-5300 usually. Lower in traffic. What makes you want to shift at 3000? Are you hearing engine noise? They are a thrashy little motor, that's for sure.
Don't take it to the track unless you really like being embarassed. The clutch will be just one of your issues.
BTW, how did you ever come out with your exhaust issue and your cold start problem? Did you find the causes? Let us know how you resolved the problems.
Good luck. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

Thanks for the link. I won't be seeing the unitl Thanksgiving but until then I will see what i can do. What makes me feel that I need to shift is the engine noise which makes sounds like the car is red lining.
Sadly, the exhaust leak and cold start issues were never solved. The last time I drove the car the exhaust had lost a support and was sagging down a bit. The cold start issues apparently hasn't been solved either, but I would like to solve it. For those who don't remember it, the problem is that the car shuts of when starting the car cold (the rpms drop from 1k to 0) unless I hold the gas to keep the rpms over 1k. I believe it is the cold start valve, but I am not completely sure.
Also I don't expect to win any races on the track with the car. I plan on being passed and laughed at, but it will be my first open track event so I just want to have a little fun and see how the 924 drives without speed limits stop lights. |

My apologies. I was thinking drag racing track. Sorry.
Definetly take it to a road track. Most fun you can have with your clothes on!
(Yeah, yeah, I know, you can probably have some other fun with your clothes on, too.) _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |
