A six-speed? Hmmm... interesting!

Germans use the same numbers as us, mate.
But seriously, Smoothie's right, plug the VIN into the decoder and you'll know for sure what it is... or at least what it started as... this six-speed thing's intriguing _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

The '77's were the first we got here, I think. I've never seen nor heard of a '76 even though I think they started to be manufactured in '76. It's good in so much as they're the lightest and make a good basis for a track car but it's not so good 'cause they miss out on all the later upgrades.
But if you've got a six speed 'box, seems like someone's been at it already..? They only came with a four-speed initially (i.e. in '77 and '78 I think). What else has it got? How's the condition? Is it running? How about some photo's?
If it's Australian-delivered, it'll have a compliance plate in the engine bay. If it doesn't have a compliance plate, it's an import. Most likely from England (I've come across a couple). That's not a problem, as I don't think they were any different anyway.
Here's an article I have from a 1976 copy of Wheels magazine describing Aussies first taste of the toofah.
And givus some more info! _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

Interesting. Only 6 speed that will work in the car is from the 92-95 968. Take a look at your clutch under the hood, and determine whether or not you have a hydraulic clutch or just a cable and a lever.
As for the engine, can you visually tell the difference between a 924 and a 944 motor?
Does it look like this
Or does it look like one of these?

Hi majesticnights and welcome to another ozzie member, you have fired up my interest in the 6 speed ? I would be very interested in more info as to what exactly it is I don't think porsche put one in the 924 but sound like someone found a way. I am coming down to Melbourne from Brisbane at christmas if you need any parts or help let me know I may be able to help you out

i have never had so much intrest in any of my cars this is amazing givin the car i have just sold (87 vl hdt calais sport wagon 5.6ltr v8 only one ever built!) anyhow
the compliance plate, although in german is under the bonnet thus i guess its an ozzie delivered car however the bonnet release is on the lefthand side so this says to me that it was converted, or did they come out like this?
it is in relitivly good condition outside but inside the console is broken, front seats are cracking through heat damage, dash is all cracked however everything else is in good working order.
it is definatly the 2 ltr 924 engine but for a first porsche i think she will fit quite nicly.
i have never drivin it on the road as i only got it running recently, however i am positive that there are 6 gears there just from feel, or it is a majorly dodge 4 speed
someone prior to me has had a shot at doin it up tho as it is evident that it was once the bright porsche green but rest asured it is a dark purple now looks quite nice actually
as for parts a passenger side window if availble would be great, im a little lost for places to find stuff for these cars.
im planning to build my own interior for it, as im somewhat gifted in the areas of customisation and love my own feel to my vehicles, as for the outside, i love the colour so that will be staying but i have seen some wide body kits for 924's on the net and love the look, but again, im yet to find these sorts of parts in oz _________________ cheers chev, |

Your more likely to have a 4 speed then a 6..not to say someone couldn't have swapped in a 968 transaxel. If you get under the car and get the # or take a sanp shot we could tell you really quick.
BTW...Kal.....I have a 1976..but it's a bit far off from stock now....opps, I didn't know they were rare! _________________ 1976 924

Welcome to the board. Hate to be one of the naysayers but you're probably looking at a 4 speed with a sloppy shifter bushing that needs to be replaced. Once you get it running you'll know for sure. I just can't see anyone going through the work/money of installing a 968 trans into a '77 but then hey...stranger things have been done!
Good luck and keep us posted. Luckily you have a few other board members willing to help out over there. Goes much easier that way. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

Welcome.
Your first purchase should be the Haynes manual. Click the 924.org link at the top of the page and have a good read.
Enjoy. _________________ 1979 924 (Gone to a better place)
