We're off on the NZ's ultimate road race this week. It's a tarmac rally covering about 2300kms with almost 800ks of closed special stages!
Jinxed is my crew chief, so hopefully he'll be able to keep the old 924 running to the finnish, as well as updating you all with our progress from time to time if we can get the internet connection working on the lap top.
You can also keep track of us through www.targa.co.nz, and we're car #223. _________________ Andrew

Seeded 12th out of over 170 entrants. Impressed!

Yeah, but the unfortunately the slowest starts 1st, so we're actually seeded 12th from the bottom!! The good bit about that is that we can only go up!
I'm hoping that reliability will help us to move up through the field, because the power certainly won't Our weight to Kw ratio is somewhere around 11.5:1, where as the top cars are about 3.5:1.
There are 29 Porsches entered, which makes them the largest showing for any one make in the event.
To me just getting such an old car to the finnish will be a huge achievement. _________________ Andrew

Yeah, that's what Jurgen Barth, Doc Bundy and Derek Bell said back in the '80's. _________________ 1981 931 (Concours)

Just back from the shakedown stage. The car died suddenly while waiting to start the stage, so I had to do a quick repair on the start line! Nothing too serious, just a freak ignition switch failure, so swapped in a spare switch and away it went. About 2 kms into the stage we had to slow right down as the road was blocked by a very sad looking Australian 968. There were three other major accidents on the stage (including a GT3 which was also over from Aus) which seems crazy when nothing counts until the official start on Tuesday.
Hopefully we can keep it together tomorrow so we can start to get really serious on Tuesday. _________________ Andrew

I'm Andrew's wife, Bron, and he's asked me to try and keep you all updated on progress during the Targa (since the internet wasn't going to happen on the laptop they took!)
Yesterday involved laps round Pukekohe race track - uncovered a few hassles for him, the ride feels wrong since he got the alignment done before the race, and with the slight raise in suspension and hard tyres, he almost had an off on the track! He'd advanced the ignition and it seemed to be running really well, but on the track when he got to 140kph, it started missing, then did that in high revs in each gear except 2nd from then on. He's decided that it just likes to be thrashed, trying to take it easy isn't suiting it! Today is the long haul (about 10 hours of driving) down the country to New Plymouth, so I don't think I'll hear anything till late today (still, no news is good news!!) _________________ Andrew

Thanks for the update! This is exciting to follow, Speed TV here typically puts together a highlight show of the Targa New Zealand (as well as the Targa Newfoundland, our Canadian version), so hopefully he well get at least some camera time! _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |
