I'm entering the BMW driving school and I'm wondering what kind of helmet I should get. I have a few already but they are ATV helmets and I'm wondering if driving a car would mean I should get a different helmet.

You want one that's rated Snell 1995 or better. Motorcycle and ATV helmets usually are no help at all in a fire. Full face are best unless you need new teeth.

Now's a great time to get a cheap deal on an SA00 (yes, go full face unless you like having your jaw wired shut); the new SA05 helmets are now out, and so 00's or 95's are selling off cheap. Check with your sanctioning body, find out what date you need at a minimum.

I have always used Bells personally, but yes Simpson are good too - about to get a new Simpson for work.

What I am doin to a helmet is painting it 2 tone the same
as my car..its a full face bmx helmet though. My bike is the
gonna be the same as my car also..got all the paint just no
time yet ..during the holiday I imagine.

If budget is a concern definitely go with a new SA2000 rated helmet, they were the most current rating until a month ago, and are still good and new, most stores are more than happy to make a deal with you on one. If you can, go to several racing safety shops and try them on first and see what kind of deal they can give you before you start shopping online.....different brands fit differently, and sizes are off by a little between the brands as well.

Simpson makes great helmets, but they do not fit everyone.....the Voyager has a very short chin line and those with a long facial structure will stick out . Bell and Bell/Pyrotect fit most people, and are good lightweight helmets with outstanding value. G-Force is the same. ALWAYS try them on first if you can.

For a NEW SA2005 helmet, in open face you will be looking at about $170, full face for starting at $270 and go up from there. Manufacturers have rules and regulations for what helmets and safety gear can sell for to protect the value of their products and to protect the consumer against internet scammers and garage businesses, so always be wary of super-low internet pricing--- often they are not authorized dealers of the products they are offering and can offer no warranty nor support, and the manufacturer will not honor any claims or issues that may arise if you purchase from them. Also, sometimes "seconds" or returned damaged goods are sold at heavy discount for display purposes but manage to make it on the internet, and sometimes that is what you see when you see that super-cool helmet for $100 less than regular price! Safety gear is not the place to buy used or damaged items...stay away from eBay, unless you know the guy.

Good luck in your search, and be sure to get a helmet bag to lessen the chance of helmet scratches, chips, or damage-- most sanctioning bodies will not pass a helmet in technical inspection if exterior or interior damage is present. If you are not sure of the condition of your helmet, bring it to a tech center or send it to the manufacturer for free inspection. It's your head, protect it!

This is not an advert, but I run a racing safety shop in CA that has been serving racers since 1969. Do your homework, and try to try on the helmets first before you shop online--guarantees proper fitment. An M-rated helmet (M00, M05) fit differently than an auto helmet, and while lighter in weight do not offer proper protection--- M helmets are designed for large single impacts in an unrestrained environment with no fire protection, while SA (auto) rated helmets are designed for multiple impacts in an enclosed restrained environment with fire protection.

BTW-- SA95 helmets are long gone and should not be sold. The stock of SA00 helmets are still good in most shops, and many places are slowly getting the SA05 helmets in. Do not search for/buy SA95 helmets.
