Well my fuel pump went out agina. First why would it go out at every 50-75 miles. And would runnig the car with no ignition hurt the pump???Cause me a dad checked the compresion on it last week and we ran the car a little with no ignition, so would that have killed it?? Cause this was a new pump and it died on us halfway down the road. And is there any good, and cheap alternative pumps. This is a outside of the tank pump. so would there agina be any cheap alternative.
Sincerely,

A question first, how did it run in the 50-75 miles before the pump went out again? You probably already know this, but just in case, disconnect the battery and remove all sources of sparks when working on the fuel system. I would begin by doing a quick verification that the inlet hose to the pump was not kinked or have blockage. Contaminants in the fuel system, ie., rust, corrosion, old gas that has formed varnish deposits, etc. are the biggest enemy of the CIS system.
If you have an intank pump also, verify it is operating properly. If it is bad and disintegrating, it can spew metal shavings into the 2nd external pump causing it to fail prematurely. Check the screen filter on the inlet to this pump. You will have to drain the tank to do this. This screen filter can become quite filled with contaniments over time.
Also, check the tank for contaminants (BE CAREFUL not to cause any sparks!). The best way is to remove the sending unit from the top of the tank and shine a flashlight (A SPARK SOURCE!) down in there.

Not quite sure what you mean by "no ignition". The pump(s) (not sure if you also have a 2nd intank pump like the turbos) will run for a few seconds when you first turn the ignition switch to ON or START. Running the pump(s) without the engine running will not cause any damage.

The lowest cost alternative is probably this board in the for sale section. Post your request and I'm sure someone on this board will help you out. A used one from a boneyard is another possibility. If it's rebuilt or new that you want, check out the following post:

The way to do a compression test is remove the fuel pump relay so the pump doesn't run - you don't want it squirting fuel into the cylinders during the test because it'll just wash the oil off the cylinder walls, and then drip down into the oil pan. If that's happened, you should change the oil. Leaving the pump to run while testing shouldn't hurt the pump - it "just" hurts the engine and dilutes the oil. (Also remove all the spark plugs for a compression test.)
I don't see why your pump should go bad so fast. -Unless there's some junk in the fuel tank that's getting pulled into the pump, choking, then burning it out. Other than that, my guess would be just bad luck with a used pump. Was it a used one? _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

You're correct of course. We sometimes forget the very early cars had only a single external pump.
Given the age of these cars it is worth checking the tank for 'trash' and a good filter as the electric pumps are very very prone to damage from contaminants.
And, a bad remanufacture or even new pump is possible. Another correspondant of mine who is 'in the business' has told me his return rate on brand new pumps was quite high. _________________ John

I'd be looking at warranty return for the pump.
Check the tank for contamination too. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

I'm going to ask the obvious question. Are you sure it isn't the fuel pump relay? _________________ 1987 951 - M193 Version for Japan |
