I was trying to remove the clutch yesterday on my 1980 931. I removed the exhaust pipe, the wastegate, the starter, and the clutch slave cylinder (the tranny is removed, as I will be replacing it with another one). I tried to pull the torque tube back. It won't budge. I pulled and pulled and nothing so I wedged a screwdriver in there and pried and then a larger screw driver. I finally got it back about 4 inches. . . Now I notice that the tube was moving back but the drive shaft was not. The tube was sliding around the shaft. How could the safte be so stuck. It's through the clutch right? and it needs to be able to slide in the clutch easily for the clutch to move? I don't understand what's holding it up and I have no idea what to do to get it out. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Are you trying to take the torque tube off of the clutch housing, or the clutch housing off or the engine?

If you are trying to seperate the engine from the clutch housing, you need to remove the clutch release lever shaft first, or the clutch housing and torque tube assembly cannot be removed properly (but you could force the drive shaft out of the tube as you are doing).

oops. Well. . . I'm glad to know there is something I can do to get this apart. When I was under the car there was nothing that jumped out at me. What does the clutch release lever shaft look like? How do I take it out? Thanks for the info you have already given me.
