Hi guys,

I have been farting around with getting the fiberglass rear flares to fit and stay on for too long!

I have tried a couple kinds of fiberglass adhesives and epoxy resins. Most don't hold between steel fender and fiberglass in the first place.

The main problem is that the top of the flare just butts agains the fender so there is very little contact area. This makes it very difficult to get a good bond.

I have even tried filling the area between the flare and the fendor around the wheel welll with "stuff" expanding foam to give it more strength and stiffness.

Must be some of you that have done this and got it to work and look good??

The flares are fom IFC and the same as the ones from GT racing.

HELP, any ideas appreciated!

Lots of pop rivets with big washers on the front and rear to help spread the load, just like the real cars.

They never lasted that long, so the real racers didn't waste a lot of time and effort. The rubber beading took up the seam gaps, so there wasn;t a lot of time used to make the things look pretty.

Do it "real racing" style....

I thought about using pop rivets but was concerned that you would have to put on a boat load of bondo to cover them??

Thanks for the information/ ideas.

Why cover them?

You will need to access them to replace the flares anyway.

Bob if you can find a product called SMC it will do exactly what you need it to. It is a specifically designed body filler and adhesive for joining metal to composites. It is designed to stay flexible enough to compensate for the different rates of expansion that metal and fiberglass have. I use it exclusivly for joining flares, repairing fiberglass components, and even for creating protoypes and custom parts to finish off body kit installs.

Looks like this...

I can get more info off the can if you are interested.

You might also consider using something to pinch the flare to the fender on the top from inside the wheel well. Post some pics of the style of flare you have (I know of 3 different ways to attatch 937 flares).

How did you cut the quarter panel to accept the flare?

How's the 12th looking? I'd like to hook up that Sunday on the way back from Funfest. LMK and we can see about organizing a GTG at your crib.

I bought my flares from GT Racing. The fit was not the best. I drilled holes through the outside of the flares and bolten them to the body. Prior to that I used a two part epoxy that cost about $100 for the fit. The two parts mix when you squeeze it out of the special tube. Put on the adhesive and then bolt to body. I filled in the seams with bondo and smoothed them prior to drying. The look is fabulous. I will send pictures if you like. Mine did not fit well either. I sanded the parts that made the flares stick out a bit. I am very happy with the results.

I hope you intend to cut the body and weld the shell to the frame. I cut about 3in off and welded and then filled the inside with fiberglass to eliminate spaces left by the welding if any.

Another thing. If you intend to change the rear torsion bars now is the time to do it. If you put on the flares and then decide you will have to cut the flares to take them out.

On the bottom of the flares we screwed the FG to the underbody so that it did not have a space there.

Good luck. If you want to call me let me know.

Thanks for the information guys!

jpab924. I used to live in crown point! Problem is that my flares from IFC do not have the flap/extension that overlaps on the body. They just fit flush so there is like a 90 degree butt joint along the top.

I will take some pictures.

Yes I need to come out there some weekend. There is a guy in South bend that has a 924 with a LT1 under the hood that I have been trying to meet and compare notes too.

Stop by anytime Bob! I just got back from league night at Pheasant Valley...almost made a pitstop at Jolly Rogers (previously known as Sharon`s Cove) If you lived in CP, you know what goes on in there!

Bob, I never mentioned anything about going. It would be something neat to go and do. Unfortunately, it is my scheduled Sat. to work. There are only 3 of us to cover on sat`s, 1 guy is on vaca, and I`d have to move mountains to get the other guy to cover my scheduled Sat. Maybe next time!
