this is kinof a dumb question but I'm wondering if I can replace the oil filter from the top of the car.
I want to change my oil tomorrow but I haven't gotten my ramps yet. I can take the oil plug off without raising the car but I don't know if I replace the filter from teh top of the engine.
another thing do you have to replace the metal gasket on the oil plug each time or can you reuse it?
thanks. _________________ 78 924 sold.

I have a 931 so I can't really answer your question, but I can offer a solution.
Drive one side of your car up on a curb. It works wonders I hear. |

I kinof ran out of money. I have to pay for welding on my exhaust tomorrow to put a new muffler on and extend the tip out of the rear to maybe help with the fumes entering my car and giving me headaches.
I felt like passing out today when I drove home from school I had my windows down which I think made it worse.
currently my muffler does not come out from the bumper at all its like 2-3 inches behind the bumper so i don't know if that would cause it to blow back and come into from the side windows.
i'll buy ramps next week to change my starter.
the thing is I have to buy a hydraulic jack to get the wheel chocks they only come in the kit they don't sell them seperately. _________________ 78 924 sold.

Nah, just wait until you have the ramps, then do the starter & oil change while it's up there, a few more days ain't gunna make the slightest difference.
No need to get the chocks right away. Once you're on the ramps, put the car in gear with the handbrake on & it ain't goin' anywhere, even if you & 4 other guys were to push with all your might!
As has already been advised, if you REALLY feel you need to also chock the back wheels, use a couple of blocks of wood, or a couple of old bricks, or a couple of big rocks or whatever you can find.
THE CAR WILL NOT ROLL OFF THE RAMP! _________________ TJ

ill agree with tj, just find some rocks, or old bricks, or whatever is large and will block the wheel from moving, and just jam it behind the rear wheels. if you cannot buy ramps, go around to your neighbors and ask if they have ramps, or if they have a 2 ton jack. dont take it to a mechanic, to be honest, mechanics are there because they can take your money. DO IT YOURSELF, it'll save you the money. _________________ '81 924 n/a |

what ever you do, DON"T buy cheap jack stands, my father has told me stories about watching them fold in half when put underneath a car they should have held.
Think about it, you're going to get underneath a car, do you really trust your life to cheap tools. _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

OH WOW, go to wall mart and buy a 2ton floor jack for 20-30 bucks. or buy the WALMART speacial for 50 bucks(i did)
its a big box of no-name brand stuff that actually isnt that bad. Mine came with a small 2ton jack 2x 2ton jack stands, 2x wheel chocks(triangle pieces of rubber, yall make a big deal out of wheel chocks, a 4x4 like 3inches long will work) and a creeper. it was $50 usa.
Oh and you can go buy a welder(not from walmart...plz) for the same price it will probably cost you to pay someone to weld it. Practice some, read up on technique and try to do it yourself.
I'm 17 and i think too many people let other people work on thier cars, This is the easiest car i have ever worked on, i am still learning how to work on cars, and if there was any car to learn on, it would be this one. _________________ late 1979 porche 924, red 2.0l NA 5speed snailshell

Ramps?
I borrowed a set from work, but the front valance makes it impossible to drive up against these. I looked around for different ramps, but all the sets I have seen have the same angle.
You should definitely check that the set of ramps you want to buy does not interfere with the front valance.
If I recall correctly I changed the oil filter from above. I think the alternator was removed, because it had to come out anyway for a change of the voltage regulator.
