Guy's,
My '81 931 has the breather pipe from the rear of the block, which goes to the "Purolater"?. The pipe then splits into two, one of which goes to the CIS air pipe on the turbo side, the other to the front of the block, just to the left of the water pump.
My question is this- this pipe, to the front of the block, is it a return to the block or a breather from the block??
Your help and expertise is always appreciated.
Regards,
Steve |

There were a few different revisions of the breather plumbing, but basically, you should find: The "Purolator" part is the air/oil seperator. Gasses from the breather on the side-rear of the block enter the seperator near its' top. A drain from the bottom of it (the seperator) leads back to drain into the oil pan just above the oil drain plug at the rear of the oil pan. Another line from very top of the air/oil seperator leads back to the air filter box. -If- you have a line to the front-side of the head, that should come from another small metal air/oil seperator that's well hidden below the exhaust manifold, near the turbo and is connected to the oil drain from the turbo.
That describes how mine is set up anyway... If you have a line from the seperator that splits off, with one part of it leading to what appears to be the front of the block, left of the water pump - you'll probably find that actually goes to the small seperator for the turbo drain that I described, in which case you wouldn't have the hook-up at the front-side of the head. Probably safe to assume this is the arrangement you have, so the line you're asking about is a breather and not a drain (it's a breather for the turbo oil drain). _________________ "..it's made in Germany. Smoothie,
You're a star!! My Purolater doesn't have a feed going from it's underside to the sump. However, i guess it's safe to say that i can route both the pipe from the rear of the block and the one besie the water pump up to my catch tank.
Obviously, i will blank off the pipe going into the turbo inlet, and i should be good to go.

Steve |

Make sure you do seal up the turbo breather well - I had a big oil leak on my car when I bought it in the turbo area and it turned out to be the breather pipe from the air/oil separator (Purolator unit) down to the turbo oil return breather having been poorly replaced. It was a new (Mocal steel braided) breather pipe, but due to difficult access at the turbo end it wasn't clamped up at the turbo end at all & oil was escaping big-time
I found I had to lie under the car & wiggle the pipe & hose clamp onto the breather port until the hose clamp came into view & could be tightened up with a long screwdriver passing up alongside the turbo. Patience required... _________________ '82MY 924 Turbo Euro RHD |
