| So I did the air leak routine with a spray can of carb cleaner, and I found out that somehow I have air leaks in my throttle body right where the two bolts/whatever go through it to the two butterfly valves. I have a Haynes manual, but it doesn't give any description of this construction. Does anyone know how these are constructed, and if there's maybe an o-ring or something like that that I can replace on them to make them airtight again? thanks for your help! |

If your throttle body is worn out (are you sure that the leak is coming from the butterfly shaft?), then it would be easier and cheaper to find a good replacement on a junkyard car).
Before you do that, make sure that a different leak is not actually causing the problem. When was the last time that you replaced the fuel injector seals? Have you already replaced all of the vacuum lines? When you spray carb cleaner under the hood, it could be sucked up by many other leaks in the general area of the throttle body (leaking fuel injector inserts, intake manifold piping, or the throttle body gasket?). How about the vacuum lines attached to the throttle body? |

| well its prettly localized...when you spray along the throttle body gasket, nothing, when you spray on the injector o-rings, nothing...its only when you shoot it straight down the butterfly valve bolts that the idle smooths out. |

Wow, they must be worn! I've never heard of a leak there. Something sounds wrong. Is there free play on the shaft? The only thing holding them in place are the bolts in the butterfly and the nut on top. The clearances through the body on the shaft are minimal.Get a junkyard replacement like Gohim said or grease the tops. Pull it apart and take a look. Go with an Audi replacement because they are a dime a dozen. _________________ 1978 924 95 mile daily driver.

I knew that positive thinking thing wouldn't work. |

| well it is a 1978 thats been sitting in a garage unstarted for 15 years, so who knows what could have happened in that time. There is a little bit of slop between the nut on top and the little washer below it, although the nut can't be tightened any more. I'll check out a replacement part at a junkyard. any audi's that work best, or is it anything I can get a hold of? |
