I thought my car was just burning oil (after getting an oil change I had to add one quart after 2 months).

there is a slight leak from the camshaft gasket, this looke pretty easy to replace.

the camshaft oil seal also leaks a bit but I don't think it needs replacing immediately.

but I felt behind my engine (behind distributer area) and it was all wet with oil so that isn't good. Is the oil pressure sender the onll thing back there that could be leaking this oil?

this doesn't look good because I don't think I can remove the oil pressure sender because I can't reach in there and see anything back there to remove it...

Is it possible for me to to replace the oil pressure sender gasket without removing the engine or no?

I looked in the faq but couldn't find the article about this , I have seen it before.

thanks.

BTW..it may not be the sensor..oil can be moved round a long way from the source of the leak, just as leaks in a roof can show up a long way from where it's getting in. Maybe the oil's just accumulating at the back of the head. Clean it off, and see what happens in the next week or two..

won't it either be the oil pressure sender or the camshaft gasket (less likely) ?

I looked in haynes but I'm wondering how you would remove the oil pressure sender with the engine in the car. there is barely any space to reach back there.

would you have to remove the distributer etc.

Well, there's no point guessing where the oil is coming from. Why don't you check it out as I suggested? Get a rag and a light and clean everything. And if it's your oil sensor, of course it's OK to remove your distributor to make it easier if you think that's necessary. Just be careful to mark it/ make notes/whatever to make sure it goes back where it was.

... and, don't forget, the distributor drive/housing is a potential source of leaks itself!

it is more likely that the distributor housing gasket is leaking, but if you need to take off the oil pressure sending unit be VERY carefull when you reinstall it as it is easy to strip it and the head is will be what will strip, and if you do that you are going to be either pulling the head or the engine,

you can replace the oil pressure sending unit without removing the distributor housing but it isnt easy to get the wires on and off.

and only 1 quart every 2 months, I wouldnt be overly worried about that, not in a car of this vintage.

well now I'm scared to touch it.. do I just have to be carefull not to overtorque it ?

also where would I get a new gasket for both the oil pressure sensor/ distributor?

When the mechanic that worked on my car removed the oil pressure sending unit, he crimped it and it started to leak, so if you used a vice grip or something that could have caused it to crush a bit and leak..

so would I have to get a new oil pressure switch or just a gasket?

can anyone tell me where I can order or get a gasket for the oil switch.

I want to change the gasket for the distributer also when I remove it.

do you need a deep socket or a wrench to take the oils pressure sensor off?

min currently has one wire not connected so thats why my oil pressure dial is always all the way to the end.

I think this has been mentioned before but these engines WILL burn/lose oil. Unless you're running fully synthetic and have a perfectly tight engine (practically impossible in a car this age), then it is perfectly normal to burn/lose some oil.

How much is normal? Well I don't know for sure. But how many miles did you do in your two months of driving?

One quart is slightly less than one litre, right? I wouldn't consider one quart consumption over, say, one thousand miles as anything to worry about. Even more than that would be acceptable in a car of this age, I'd guess.

Anyone got "official" oil consumption figures?

And to those who are gonna stick their hand up and say "My car doesn't burn/lose any oil," I say a) is your car running and b) have you just rebuilt the engine and are using fully synthetic? Hmm? I'm looking at you gohim

That's not to say you don't have a problem with oil leaks. Maybe you do. But then again, you'd be surprised how little oil it takes to make a BIG looking mess...

well i've never seen puddles of oil or anything on my driveway just felt behind the distributer and it was wet with oil nad also where the spark plugs go had a bit of oil.

I don't do much driving, just drive in my city but I do alot of stop and go driving in traffic.

In 2 months I doubt I drive more than 800 kms.

I mostly drive to work which is only a 5 minute drive. And when I start college again its just a 20 minute drive.

I also drive around too but I haven't driven out of my city yet because I'm still waiting to get my seatbelts (ebay) and I still haven't had time to get my exhaust replaced so I get headaches driving for too long.

too bad my trip meter and odometer don't work. I have no clue about actual kms.

For seat belts I went to the local aftermarket store and got 2 belts for a VW.

Should have fixed it while you had the dash out.

OK, it probably matters more how long the engine is running for rather than how far you actually travel.

So it's five minutes to work and back each day? Ten minutes a day? Is that five days a week? Say, less than an hour a week your car is running?

Doesn't sound like a lot of driving in two months so yeah, your oil consumption does sound high in that respect. Ridiculously high? I don't know but I doubt it.

One quart every 500 miles does sound high to me but as I said, I can't say for sure what's "normal".

It's always good to have a look at your oil. Have you changed it recently? How long ago?

Have a look at it... and when I say have a look at it, I just mean pull the dipstick out and have a look at the end in good light. It's like wine: You may not know what good wine tastes like but you sure know when you taste a bad one

Is it a nice colour? i.e. not black..?
