I'm pretty sure I need a new starter. Mine alot of the times the solenoid just goes click and the starter doesn't engage and then it suddenly works.
my old mechanic tested it and said the starter is bad.
I want to attempt to replace it myself and need to order one.
all I can find are rebuilt ones.
paragon products has 2 bosche rebuilt starters adn one is 90 bucks and the other is 130 and both have the same description.
I don't get this... and what is the "core charge"
also is this the best place to order a starter from? _________________ 78 924 sold.

also when looking at parts prices it looks like parts for the 924na are basicly the same price as the part for the 944. I thought parts for the 924 were much cheaper.
the parts for the cayenne look extremely expensive. alternator is 1300 us for the part. why the hell is it that expensive? _________________ 78 924 sold.

Just so you know, places like Advanced Auto, Auto Zone and Napa actually sell items such as starters, alternator, and water pumps fairly reasonable. They are usually order items but it can be shipped directly to the store you order from within a few days. I replaced my starter and alternator last winter and it didn't cost an arm and a leg (around $120 for both). Just watch and ensure you label which wire goes on what post on the starter or you will fry the alternator. Replacement is pretty straight forward, three bolts undue the wires and replace with a new one. A core charge is a fee a store charges you to ensure you bring back the old component so it can be rebuilt. If the component isn't physically damaged you get that money back when you return the old part back to the store. _________________ Rob E.

I have had very good luck with Advance Auto Parts, Don't know if there is one up where you live. The core charge is just so you will return your old one so that they can rebuild it. I have never had a problem with a rebuilt starter or alternator - maybe I have just been lucky.
The starter is not hard to replace but you have to put the car up on jack stands unless you are extremly thin. Also if I recall the top bolt was a bit a pain but doable.
The other issue is the correct starter. I did the seach here and Lizard had a number for a starter, if I recall it didn't match what I had, I suggest you do a search. DON'T give them your old starter until you get your new one installed. It took me like 3 times before I got the correct one. They were really close in size but just a bit too big to fit in the small location.
For a beginner like you figure about 6 hours from start to finish. Chances are you will also get the wrong starter (not your fault) so the car will be laid up for a couple of days waiting for a new one. _________________ 79 924 NA |

in regards to the starters, the 944 unit will NOT work it turns the wrong way,
I believe that the Bosch SX10 is the correct starter but I would confirm that with searching the board for that part #,
the other option is to contact cbass and ask if he would be willing to sell you the starter which is in the 924 he got off of me as that starter is under 1 year old and is in excellent condition, the other option is to take your starter out and take it to a bosch tech and have him rebuild it, prob about the same price _________________ 3 928s, |

Heh, that start is in my car right now. I have a good starter, although the solenoid has a broken contact on it. If it's just the starter motor you need, I'll let ya have it for cheap.
It's most likely your solenoid that's gone bad. I'm not sure if hte 924 solenoid is rebuildable or not, 90% of the time when a solenoid is bad, you can disassemble it, clean it up and put it back together again, and it'll work fine. _________________ '81 931 in various states of assembly |
