I'm averaging 20 mpg in my 78 924 N/A 4 speed. Just curious to know if others are averaging the same or better. Do I need a tune up to improve the gas mileage?

if your getting 20 mpg then you need some sort of tune up. I used to get 30 + mpg with my 924 when it was stock.

My euro is getting about the same as the others, low 30mpg's on the open road driven normally, mid 20's around the doors, low 20's if I'm really ripping things up.

I'm only getting 18mpg with easy driving. I think its tuned well, and I have gone over allmost every componet and re-built or replaced each. No smoke or residue, no rough running, actually very happy with the performance. Just what would be the likley cause of poor fuel economy. I do run an air-fuel gauge and a fuel pressure gauge and both seem to be reading correctly.

well, first off- your in California-- they run the crappiest gas ever in the ever-loving illusion that they think it will get better emissions... also if your car is setup for california emissions then that will also rob you of economy.... of course to save gas and save emissions..... uhhhh......................

Is your thermostat operating at the correct temp.
Spark plugs correct type and heat range.
Fuel mixture correct?
Vacuum lines all ok- including breather to crank?
Idle set to specs?
I get the mpg you describe in my work truck.

Thermostat is operating at the correct temp.
Spark plugs are correct type and heat range.
Spent a lot of time on Fuel mixture and timing etc. have gone through this over and over and every time it works out to the same settings. I'm 100% confident that it is correct.
Replaced all vacuum lines even the ones through the firewall. I don't really understand why the crank breather hose would affect gas mileage.
Idle is set to specs.
I agree the mileage is bad and I am at a loss as to why, especially since it seems to burn clean and run nice.

Depending on line setup the crank breather is connected to either the air box or between the boots to the throttle body.
It effects O2, performance and emissions and if connected to the boots- vacuum.
It should have a restrictor in the 3/4 hose to reduce the volume drawn from the crank.
This restrictor can be missing or blocked, hose cracked or broken.

Wonder what a 76 944 gets for mileage. Saw a nice one the other day
with nice chrome rims with the flat style center caps the big ones that sit inset a litle.

Do you mean '76 924, Joes924Racer? There weren't any 944 built in '76...

I get about 22-25mpg in my Turbo, which seems to be right on the money. I've never measured the consumption when I've been driving hard... I'm guessing it's not great

By the way, down here we measure fuel consumption in litres per one-hundred kilometres. My car gets 9.5-10.5l/100km. I've always thought that's a strange way to measure consumption. It's one of the few times I think the Yanks have actually got a better measurement system than ours
