The price of gas continues to go up almost on a daily basis. Has anybody ever considered a propane conversion to a 924? Perhaps a dual system
gas and propane? Any thoughts?
Thanks

no reason that it couldnt be done, however I think that you would REALLY want to up the CR before you did this, _________________ 3 928s, |

I actually have a propane conversion I have done on a 924, if you are not going to up the compression ratio, you need to add boost.
You will not be able to do Propane injection, if thats what you are thinking, unless you are prepared to spend thousands, their are a few propane injection kits out their, most of them are as a fuel adder for diesel or even gas turbos.
Their are companies that do propane injection just like a EFI setup, but these kits are usually available only overseas and still costly.
Their are a few companies working on this for the US that would be certified and all that.
You can however do it yourself.
I have a propane injection converion I am working on using some prototype injectors from MSDs parent companuy, they have a deadicated propane division, they make a lot of stuff for the conversion, mostly stuff to allow you to add the propane and run a dual fuel vehicle. Most of it is for the big three and works with TBI or EFI and tricks the computer into thinking its firing the injectors.
But the basics, real real simple. You dump all the EFI or CIS stuff. You setup ignition. You add a turbo, supecharger or high compression pistons.
You run basically a draw thru or blow thru with the turbo or supercharger.
Keep in mind your fuel to air ratio is different with propane and it will naturally displace some air. Since you will be feeding it as a gas, no you cant just inject LPG into your engine and it converst to a gas at like -40 so you have to run a line from your radiator to the regulator to keep it from freezing up.
You need a bottle like the Forklifts use or some such, in whatever capacity you want, you need the fixtures, the hoses, a regulator and a mixer.
You need a Throttle body setup and adapter. YOu can basically set it up with out high compression or boost and it will work but you gas mileage will suck.
To get the most out of it you need higher compression and the right spark and timing.
With a good setup you are looking at about 9/10 the fuel economy of a gas setup and on a CIS car, you probably would pick up gas mileage.
Another thing to remember the research octane rating of propane is 110-120. I have talked about this before.
I have even done one conversion. It can be done and done well under a 1000. Depending on parts used and setup.
But the beauty is the cost, yea you pay out the nose for little tanks of propane, but get basically a 20 gallon tank and you are talking about 14.00 or less depending on your area. to fill it up
I went with 30 gallon, with 27 gallons usuable and it was about 18.00 to get it filled up, filling two at a time.
I have done other cars and trucks. Beauty is you loose a tad in mileage but can pick up performance. Depending on how wild you go... their is a trade off.
After I finish my supercharger kits I will be doing a complete conversion package for the 924 and 944, especially if I get the injection setup working right, lots to work out, especially the 18 ohm rating of the injectors and then the whole timing fuel map. But it can be done. The setup I have now will start and idle, but the rest is on the back burner.
Think of it like this
--- Its like converting to carbs. basic and cold starts are not an issue. You just have to do the conversion right.
NO ONE I know of makes the electronics to trick the DME like a ford or chevy so that you could go dual fuel. BUT on a CIS car, who cares... I didnt and I had that car for a long time, it was a 77.5 with the comenrative plaq inside. Anyway she got destroyed in an accident, rear ended and you know what? Didnt even damage the propane tank, plus propane doesent spill, etc, that why it popular off road.. you can turn you car upside down on it end whatever and you will not have any fuel starvation or spill. The tanks are made to withstand impact, etc.
I will post some pics when I get a chance if anyone wants, but yea
my 924 turbo is getting this as soon as I get a chance to do it, she will run a turbo and propane, but not till after I do the rebuild and all that.
One nice thing from experience, your oil change and tune ups? Yea your talking a long time between each. I got to where even at 14000 mile intervals on oil change I got oil that look almost as clean as when I put the oil in. |
