Can I replace my stock (stamped steel) A-arms with the solid aluminum versions from a later 944? Thanks

yes, but you don't want to. the pressed steel versions are more reliable and accept bushes etc from a VW Golf/Jetta.
The alloy ones tend to have ball joint problems, but are slightly lighter than the steel.
To make handling crisper, try and get some nylon bushes turned up for all the inner mounts

According to the 944 shop manual to install the light alloy control arms (aluminum a-arms), you also need to replace:
the caster eccentric
the stabilizer to control arm linkage
the bearing parts
This list is for changing a 944 over. I don't know if you would also need to get a 944 stabilizer bar.
