Looking at the Old Car Price guides state $4,000 to $20,000 in value. What is the real world value for these cars?

Not much...
I think it's under US$5,000 for even a mint example.
Any problems... I mean any problems... you're probably looking at less than US$2,000.
Major problems and you aren't gonna get much more than a grand... _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

I find
www.vmrintl.com
http://www.vmrintl.com/condguide.htm
a good source for cars, although it's not very detailed.
Personally as far as the 924's go, I would say mine is a number 2. But if you compared my car to a new Boxster, it would be a number 4
The thing about the price of these cars is; if you can find a buyer willing to pay top dollar for a number 4, then sell it. But most often you can't even get a reasonble offer on a number 2, so if the buyer is there, they can be worth as much as you want. But if the buyers aren't there, it's totally worthless.
Instead of finding out how much it's worth to others, answer a few questions for yourself.
Are you going to keep the car for a long term?
Is it in very good mechanical condition?
Is the body in very good condition?
Is the interior in very good condition?
Are you able to tune the car or do the body work yourself?
I just priced a whole bunch of parts for the exterior and interior and WOW! Everything is expensive if you go to an after market shop. But if you buy 2nd hand, you're still getting very old parts. So you have to decide what is worth buying new and what trim piece or part you can get away with buying it used.
The arm rests are $300 US each. < Just the door handles, not the whole door panel!
If you have a car in good-great condition mechanically, then you're on the right and best path. You can always do body work or hunt down bits and pieces but you always want to know what the car's motor/tranny/brakes ect... will do next.
Well, there's a lot of words from a stranger. |

I purchased the car just last weekend. It was running rough at idle, but was ok while driving it. I found that a vacuum line had a leak. The battery was low from setting for 8 months. The car was recently painted.
The dash looks like a road map. The previous owner gave me a dash cover, but it did not fit well. I am looking for another dash cover or carpet coverlay type of product. The interior "brown" carpet has been faded from the sun. I saw on this board of people dying the carpet to bring the color back. It sound like a good plan to me.
One thing I must say, any car that runs and looks good should be worth $3000 to $4000. People are getting this for 100k mileage cars.
What would be the next step up from a 924? Collector Status? _________________ Wisconsin |

Charge the battery and if it doesn't keep the charge, you should probably get a new one.
As for dash covers, look at www.mamotorworks.com
http://www.tweeks.com/shop?frame=6.92.4396
$80 US sounds fair, when a replacement dash will be around $1,000 with taxes and shipping!
You could try dying a small piece of carpet in your cargo area first, then go for the rest.
As for price, you're on the right track. These are fun cars, they have a long history abd as long as they haven't been beaten up for the last two decades, they should be reliable.
They cost more to maintain than an average 5-10 year old car but they are a lot more fun and as long as you know what you're getting into, there shouldn't be any big scarey surprises. |

You'd be surprised...
If the car really is in good condition then maybe it would go for about US$3,000? But there's a near perfect condition '79 Sebring advertised in the for sale forum here, super-low mileage, for US$4,000.

Not quite sure what you mean but there is pretty much only one collectable 924 and that's the 924 Carrera GT (in one of several guises i.e. GT, GTS, GTR...)
These cars can be worth a lot but they were made in very limited numbers.
There rest of the "special" models, like the Sebring mentioned above, seem to be worth very little, if any, more than a "normal" 924.
The above doesn't necessarily include the 924S series. Basically, the 924S is a newer car and hence it's worth more (it's also technically better *ducks for cover!*) than the early 2-litre cars. _________________ '80 924 Turbo |

I agree, my 924s is better than a 924... MUCH easier to find parts for if you know what your looking for and its faster than a 944 but you gota hand it to the 924 because without the 924 my car would never exist
Edit: back on topic,
I've only seen one sebring by the way, and the guy was selling it for 6 grand... (it was in nice shape) around 80,000 miles on it _________________ Proud owner of

There just isn't enough love for the 924 to become a collectors car. Unless it's one of the rare, GT's. There maybe some one with a Porsche collection that has a mint condition 924 but it won't be the centre piece of his collection.
Not fast enough and too ush stigma with VW and Audi.
All the better for us though. It keeps the prices low on the cars. |
