Does anyone know if a manual steering rack from an 84 944 will fit on my 80 931 ? _________________ 1979 Euro 931, Olive

No, it won't.
The steering shaft is a different length.
I haven't checked, but the mounting may be different as well, since the 944 has a cast alloy crossmember and the 924 is pressed and welded steel.
A 944 manual steering rack is much more rare (and expensive) since the manual steering rack was replaced by the power steering rack as standard equipment for the 84 model year.
If you have a 944 manual sttering rack in good condition (and you need a 924 rack), sell it. 944 race guys are always looking for 944 manual racks. Then, you can use part of what you get for it to buy a 924 rack since they are more plentiful (and cheaper). |

I would have given it a definite maybe. The racks look basically the same and use the same tie rod ends. Differences are in the attachment to the crossmember (although the bolt size is the same at M8x60, the 944 uses seperate "clips" and bushings while the 924 rack has welded-on "clips" for the bolts - and as a result it appears the 944 bolts are spaced further apart top-to-bottom of the rack (side-to-side spacing may be the same)(-and the diameters of the racks appear to be the same in the attachment area) -But being the resourceful type, I'd think you'd have no trouble fabricating your own "clips". Other unknowns (to me) and possible hang-ups are the steering shaft U-joint to rack spline size and the gear ratio. _________________ "..it's made in Germany.
