Okay Gentlemen, this is the scoop. I started with a '77 924 NA engine. I have upgraded the pistons from 8.5:1 to 9.3:1, ported and polished the head, had a mild street grind put on the cam, will install headers and a new exhaust system. Now, this is what I have already done. I figure what I have done should get me up to about 150 HP. This was all pretty easy stuff to do and not real expensive. Now, what else can I do (not too cost prohibitive) to perhaps get a few more HP out of it. I'm not interested in doing anything too radical, just perhaps some other minor things. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks Gentlemen, I appreciate all of your help.

Lots you can do. Just for starts:
1. Pull the catalytic converter off and all the smog equipment.
2. Lighten the vehicle by pulling off non essential parts.
3. Buy light aluminum or alloy wheels.

I forgot to mention this car will be my daily driver, so I am not too keen on stripping the interior. The wheels seem like a good idea, but are the "cookie cutters" really that heavy? I can't pull the cat off either, the state of California would have a stinkin' fit at smog inspection time.

You could put a larger throttle body on and make a cold air intake system. Take a look at my site http://www.geocities.com/eturbo924
Also check out Jon's site. There is a link on my site. He has great ideas and has impletemted them. One more I plan is his small main pulley.

You don't want to strip the interior - but you want fast with smog equipment in tact? Ah, I see, you want something for nothing!
There's lots of choice besides 'gutting' the interior. But let me play Devil's Advocate for you.
So you use your back seat to make out with your girlfriend? To carry your kids? Come on. That thing is totally useless.
And the back carpet? You use that to cushion the ride for your 4' x 8' sheets of plywood you'll carry back from Home Depot? Sheesh.
And that mat behind the back seat? You use that to make for a cushy ride for your luggage? Sheesh.
And the back seat carpeting...I guess you need that so your kids feet are comfy? Come on!
And your spare tire...well I guess you keep that there just in case a tire blows right? Why not spend a dollar or two on good light tires and take the spare out? And the compressor. And the toolpouch.
I used to think like you...then I got serious about speed. You will make MORE SPEED from LOSING WEIGHT than any other method.
Or, alternatively, you can spend thousands of dollars attempting to make an Audi truck engine into a supercar.
I didn't suggest the cookie cutters. But cookie cutters are heavier than aftermarket wheels. Mine are aftermarket, aluminum alloy and yes, they are significantly lighter than stock and lighter than the cookie cutters. And yes, it makes a significant difference.
Put it this way: You can try to make a 20 year old Audi truck engine fast, or you can put the 20 year old Audi truck engine on a skateboard. Which method do you think will make the faster car?

Awwwww Jon, that's a bit low isn't it. Pre-announcing upgrades. That's a trick that micro$oft learn from IBM isn't it?
You should be ashamed. |

Re:what else can you do that isn't too radical
maybe lighten the flywheel, maybe a racing clutch, tune the exhaust and fuel ratio, try some silver spark plugs and play with the washer thicknesses, maybe stick an older 924 ignition distrib on with the good curve........play around with the OXS trigger switches so tehy kick in earlier, or maybe even convert to a rheostat instead of switches.......lighten the pulleys/sprockets, try different octane gases (octane does not=power, lower octane gas gives more power if you aren't pinging.. Octane is like water injection)
You could experiment with different tires, harder tires will make you go faster if you are already moving, smaller tires and wheels will give you faster acceleration but decreased gear speeds. |
