Is there something to hook the vent tube from the front of the engine bay to the alternator to direct the air flow? I have the plastic connector from the front of the car to the tube, but am not sure about whether the tube connects to anything or just ends around the alternator.
Thanks,
Rob

There should be a cover over the rear of the alternator that the tube fits on to.

There should be a cowling that covers the entire back of the alternator and has a duct on the top that will accept the hose. Sometimes these get removed by the previous owner and lost. Is it in the spares you got w/the car? If not, someone here on the board may have one. Or Kurt up in Tecamah (sp?) may have one. _________________ '80 924 n/a SOLD |

I'm certainly no expert, but in my experience, this is not needed. Replaced my alternator with an aftermarket (non-porsche) almost 7 years ago. The metal cowling that was mounted on the back wouldn't mount to the new one. I left it off. 7 years and 60K+ miles later it still works fine.

I have to disagree.
I took mine off and my regulator fried within a year.
I bet yours is shot now because the cover was missing.
A cheap easy repair with 2 screws.
The alt is so close to the exhaust manifold that sucking in all that warmed air can't be good.
I'm glad yours is still working Don. _________________ 1978 924 95 mile daily driver.

When I got my car the hose and the alternator hose attachment piece were missing. I wasn't having any problems but I wanted to replace it simply because it was suppose to be there. I got the alternator hose attachment piece from a member of 924.org. The hose came from Autozone. A VW part, I think. Just a flexible air conduit. It cost less than $5.00. Then I found a silver (unpainted) one at some other auto parts store. I liked the look better. Anyway I still have the black one in near perfect condition, if ever needed by anyone. _________________ 1982 924 n/a |

I'm pretty sure I've got one of those rear alternator covers somewhere in my garage. Let me know if you want me to look for it.

Thanks Jonathan, but I got one from a guy locally. When installing it, I can't make it a tight fit because of a ground wire from the back of the alternator to the engine, about 6" or less of wire. Do I need this to be connected or can I disconnect this to make the cowling tight on the alternator? _________________ Rob

Won't it connect to the bolt on the outside of the cowling? That's what I think I did. _________________ 1982 924 n/a |

I was thinking that, but wasn't sure. I'll try that. _________________ Rob
