I replaced the alternator a few months back; the last week or two the light has been coming on dimmly, but almost only at night. It glows brighter when I turn on lights, brights, ac or heater. I try testing it during the day, but i can't get the light to come on, even with everything turned on. It's only putting out about 12.5V anyways, which is lower than when I first put it in.
is this regulator or diode problems?

Could be a short in the wiring loading down the alternator, or a bad connection, or a bad battery, or a loose drive belt, or a bad alternator.

The voltage drops on my 924 when the belt gets loose..goes back up near 14V when I tighten it.

Start by cleaning all the connections including the ones at the starter and battery. Do both the + and - connections.

I have a heavy guage earth cable attached from the engine to the body of the alternator.
When I found it had come off once I had the same problems you describe.
