Ok

So i took the 924 with dad for a test drive. Man, it handle smoothly It was the first time that i have drove the 924. I really liked the precise steering! Too bad i am leaving her here though

The only thing that had annoyed me was the clutch. I am not tall (neither my dad), and the clutch cable is long, so i have to push all the way to the end in order to engage the gear correctly, without grinding. I have adjusted the clutch cable to minimum length, but no use.

So i want to take out the cable and shorten it.

What is the length of a 924 cable?
Is it easy to take it out?

I have download Haynes from a russian site, and it looks like an easy job.

Thanx in advance

um why don't you just pull your seat closer....

I'm short too, only 5'7 but it works fine for me.....

just the clutch pedal is pretty hard to push down.....even with my new clutch cable.

I have adjusted the seat as close as i can the day i tried out the car, yet i still cant reach it. Im still 16 though (i am 160cm tall) Also, i need to hit the pedal to the end. If i dont go all the way to the end, and hit the floor, my gears grind. It SHOULD hit the floor in order to engage properly.

Check there is nothing stopping the seat from moving further forward. My wife is 165cm & initially complained about the same thing, but it turned out the floor mat I had in there was stopping the seat going any further. Now she can easily push the clutch all the way in & definitely doesn't have the seat all the way forward either.

BTW, I'm 188cm & this is the only car I've driven where I don't have the seat all the way back. These little toofahs have a deceptively large amount of leg- & head-room in the front seats.

TJ,
You've got an '82 like mine, are you seats stock? With my stock seats they seem to lean waaaaay back and they're not adjustable. Am I just missing the adjuster because the lever near the top of the seat-back just flips the seat all the way forward. I've been wondering about this for a while now.

I am positive that my cable is very long. My seat goes all the way to the front, with no obstacles in the way.

I tried to adjust it, but its still long.

Please, just give me the measurments of the cable so i could compare it to mine.

It's not the total lenght of the cable that affects where the clutch disengages. It's the lenght from the mount to the clutch lever. The spec's call for 138 mm + or - 2 mm. Try adjusting it to 136 mm and it should disengage earlier on the pedal throw. Adjusting it any shorter may cause the clutch to not fully disengage.

Thanx for the tip. Ill get to it ASAP.

The reason i am asking such questions is that, i beleive that the cable installed, isnt for the 924.

Yep

There should be a round knob at the base of the seat back where it joins onto the seat bottom. Turn it to tilt the seat back & forth. Coincidentally Smoothie just recently posted this diagram. The knob is number 11 in the diagram

If your clutch cable is to the max then you can loosen the lever on the side of the bell housing and move it to put a strain on the cable.

What makes you think that the cable that is installed is the wrong one?

The car was not parked in a field for five years without a reason.

May be the owner parked it because the clutch was worn out. Have you been under the car to check the wear on the clutch disk?

Heh thanks, I just found that messing around out there today. I was looking at smoothies diagram earlier and my seats have cloth covers over them so I wondered if something was messed up. When the PO put the covers on he must have pulled that knob off of there. I found it in a bin of extras that came with it. With the seats up to a comfortable level it's like driving a new car really, and I don't look like one of those ricer boys with the seat leaned all that way back! Thanks a lot!

its amazing how seating position can compromise the way you drive. if im not sitting right im jerky with the clutch and can get a sore lower back. my folks have a '85 911 3.2 cab that when they first got it, they both had a terrible time grounching when changing gears. my stepdad took the seat out and cleaned the tracks and all the electrics. he got more adjustment out of them then and they changed the seating position and no more grounching geasr!

I think you are mixing between posts. My car wasn't parked in a feild for 5 years.

As for knowing that the clutch cable isnt original, its long. I swear that its long. You cant engage the gear, unless you push the clutch all the way.

Thanx PORSCHEV for ur advice. Ill see what i can do.
