Yesterday while driving though a rough neighborhood, the driver-side mirror flashed in my eyes and started to fall off! Luckly I had the window down and caught it. What is the best way to re-attach the mirrow to the black plastic piece behind it?
O.T. - if you're really hot, roll the window down and and turn the whole mirror in, it acts like the little vent windows from the 50's - 70's and blows air into the car. _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

I take it that the clips broke off?
Time to buy a new mirror. |

Contact cement would be another choice. Your choices are limited by the plastic - silicone and contact cement are probably the 2 best options for sticking to plastic. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

llamaguy,
I had the same thing happen to mine while a friend was closing the door ... busted all over the place. It wasn't the tabs, it just came unstuck from the backing. I think I paid $15 to get a new mirror with backing from mikri.... I'd say that's your best bet, as any adhesive would likely be a temporary fix. As for replacements, I believe early non-S cars have a different tab orientation, so you'll have to be careful in buying a replacement.
Good catch! _________________ 1987 924S

I had the glass fall off one of mine and break. I went to a local glass shop had them cut and glue a new piece of mirror on the backing plate. I don't know what they used to secure it with though. Try local glass shops see what the recomend. _________________ 80 924

I backed into my mirror with my bro's truck (I have the flag-style power-adjustable type)
The housing was fine, but the mirror came off
I used epoxy to re-attach the mirror, but unfortunately the mirror defrost doesn't work anymore. _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE

You guys do realize that the partthat you refer to as the backing plate is actually part of the motor assembly, and not available separately, right?
If you ever need to remove the mirror, and install a factory replacement part (may be because you got tired of no defrost in the mirrors), you may have to replace the entire motor assembly. |
