I want to make my car more reliable as I need to depend on it to drive to work and school everyday and in september I will be busier with full time classes/ work so I want to make sure my car doesn't break down on me.
I have replaced my water pump, timing belt (although I think it needs to be tensioned properly), my vbelt also squeels ( alternator bushings?), changed my oil, air filter, spark plugs, battery, clutch cable.
not much but still better than nothing.
I'm still thinking of getting my brake pads replaced, brake fluid replaced and drums adjusted.
I also thought of getting all the vacuum hoses on the engine replaced as they are very old and don't look too good......
not sure if I should replace the vacuum hoses myself or just get the mechanic to do it.
I don't know which hoses need to be replaced and where to get all of them.
I think the biggest problem will be electical problems.... my fan still needs to be fixed it sometime comes on sometimes doesn't...
and last thing, my transmission grinds when shifting into second gear this usualyl happens when I drive quick and shift quickly from 1st to second...
but if I drive slower and wait a sec or two before after clutchis depressed it rarely ever grinds...
do you think my tranmission gears are going to totally fail soon or can you keep on driving with the grinding problem? _________________ 78 924 sold.

my engine runs okay right now except after I replaced my plugs (was worried gap is wrong) the engine starts usually fine but sometimes the rpm drops really low (only when cool) to like 600 rpm and the engine shakes alot more than usual. but when it warms up it idles better at 900-1000 rpm. _________________ 78 924 sold.

I read the hot start problem is caused by the fuel injectors leaking...
would it be a good idea to replace my fuel injectors but i think they are pretty pricey and might not be necessary. _________________ 78 924 sold.

As for your fans, not coming on sometimes, i have had the same problem. My wires that were connected to the relay were corroded and i had to clean them. Then everything went good.
But before discovering the corroded wires on my relay, i made a bypass switch for my fan, so i could turn it on and off using a switch in the dashboard. if u want to do such a temporary switch, i recomend using thick wires, and a switch that can withstand high amp rating. U dont want something to get hot, or melt
hope this helps

The hot start problem is covered here too Tim.
Injectors are not the only cause.
Look for another. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

I can at least answer your vaccuum lines question..
get some tape, a marker, and a measuring tape.
one by one, remove each hose, using the tape and marker to number the hose. Then use the tape and marker to number the spot that each hose came off of (BOTH ENDS). DO THIS ONE HOSE AT A TIME.
Then, take all of your old lines to an automotive shop and have them cut you new lines from the spools that they have in the back. (leave the old ones in the car until you are helped, it will prevent you from standing there looking like you just totally f@cked up your car )
Then go back home with original lines and new ones, and using the labels on the old hoses, install the new ones.
I also recommend that you get new hose clamps while you are there. The old ones get rusty and bent, which makes it difficult to reinstall.
AS FOR YOUR TRANSMISSION:
Don't worry about it for now, but do take your time shifting from 1st to 2nd. The 1st and 2nd gear synchomeshes wear out on all 016/Z transmissions, even the G31 that is used in the '80 931. Your transmission still has lots of life left in it, just take it easy. The gears will only fail if you start hammering it into gear, rather than taking a second for the gears to synchronize before you complete the shift. _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE

munkpuppy: that sounds like a whole lot of work, I just went to the parts store and bought 3 dollars worth of vaccum line, then came home and cut it into the right lengths and fitted it....

Don't you need 2 or 3 different diameters? _________________ TJ

If your car has AC, whether it works properly or not, turning on the AC also turns on the radiator fan.
Was able to continue driving when the my temp censor failed causing the car to overheat. Drove it like that while I waited for the part to come in.
