Two clamps are on the distributor. One clamp is located next to the vacuum advance. The other one is directly across. The Haynes manual page 21 shows firing order and distributor cap. Is the solid color dot directly across from the vacuum advance or the first location counter clock wise of clamp location on driver side is the location for #1 plug wire?

My #1 plug wire is by the vacuum advance first location clockwise from the clamp.

I could have the wires off by 180 degrees.

Could somebody please follow the #1 plug wire to see the location on the cap?

My car does not start.

The "correct" wire arrangement (from the point of view of standing in front of the car, looking back into the engine compartment) is - #1 rear-right, #3 front-right, #4 front-left, #2 rear-left and the clips should line-up straight front-back. -But that's only "correct" if the distributor is still in the same way they originally installed it at the factory. To verify that, with the crank and cam tdc marks both lined-up, remove the dist cap and see where the rotor's pointing. It should be aimed where #1's plug wire is when the cap's on - and if everything's as originally installed at the factory, it will be aimed toward the rear right (as viewed from the front).
-But, if the distributor was ever removed and not reinstalled exactly right, then the "correct" position for plug wire #1 for your car could be anywhere. The important thing is to have the rotor pointed at the post for plug wire #1 when both the cam and crank tdc marks are lined-up - and to have the rest of them in sequence (1-3-4-2) clockwise as viewed from above.

I switch the wires around based on your suggestion. The car fired up and ran. It ran for about two minutes. It felt under powered. I could not restart the car after this.

It has been warm here in the Midwest USA. Maybe a sensor is not working when the engine gets warm.

It is a California car emissions.

How much does battery voltage play into the electronics of this system?
