Well if I get my car back from the shop in time and the rain holds off I will be hitting up the local(hour and a half away) track. Anything I should know? This track is going to be a 1/4 mile track and its going to be about 54º.

Any tips on this stuff:
What to launch at?
What to shift at?
What to expect time wise?
What tire pressure to run?
Can I use a 20lb bag of ice to cool the intake?
Tips to cool the car off between runs?

Anything else that would be helpful?

You mean the drag strip? <shudder>

Just be gentle. The Audi transmission isn't going to like clutch-dropping launches at all. In fact, don't rule out needing a tow home if you do!

You can do some heavy clutch slipping if you want. Just keep in mind the time and $$$ it takes to replace them.

These really aren't very good strip cars at all.

I think quarter mile times are somewhere just under 17secs (?)

They are that slow quarter mile wise? I was expecting a little bit better than that, atleast 15's on stock boost.. faster if I ever got my boost controller installed..

I've never tried it and probably wouldn't go for ultimate times if I did. Doubt the old girl would handle that kind of abuse too well. Maybe when it was brand new but 25 years on..? Nah. But the previous owner mentioned mine can supposedly do the quarter in high 14's.

I actually doubt it'd run quite that quick. The slightly less than perfect gearbox would slow me down at the very least.

I think the factory claimed low 16's. So at first attempt, you'll probably run a little slower than that. Let us know, anyway. I'd be interested to see what they can do.

BTW, I did go up against a new MX-5 (Miata to the Yanks). It was on the road, not at a strip. We lined up at three sets of traffic lights, standing start each time, flat, level road and I had him beat pretty convincingly. He'd keep up off the line and on the change from 1st to 2nd he even nosed ahead on one run. But once I was in 2nd, I was pretty much walking away from him. The point? Those things are supposed to do about 16.4 down the quarter...

I wouldn't attempt it. The times will not be good and you'll wear the car out and even wreck somthing.

I had an Audi with the 016 trans, I use to do 4 wheel burn-outs, and the trans never let go, nor acted any different. I'm sure the internals were a lot different though.

This thread is really deflating my love for the 924... I thought these cars could handle a little abuse? I really want my car to be a 1/4mile car. I know they werent built for that purpose, but thats what I like.

I g-teched my car 0-60 in ~7 seconds... Thats exactly what my SHO g-teched at and ran mid to lower 15's. Also I beat my friends SHO through 2nd gear until we shut down.

Will running higher octane fuel help any? Mix a bit? I always run 93 Octane, so maybe a gallon or two of 100 octane or something?

I didn't expect everyone to embrace drag racing a 931, but I didn't think my car would blow up if I took it there...

OK, hands up who doesn't run their car to redline in the first three gears whenever they get the chance? Huh? Who hasn't cut up a mountain pass for kilometres on end, accelerating hard in each gear? (and swapping cogs as quick as you can?)

It's the clutch I'd be concerned with. But you should have no trouble if you do as -nick suggests: Take it easy and don't try clutch-dropping launches at stupid rpm. OK, you won't get mind-boggling times but I think you'll still be pleasantly surprised.

As long as your engine's in good condition, running it to redline for a few quarter mile passes shouldn't worry it at all.

I think throttle modulation can make a difference. I feel mine accelerates faster if I progressively feed on the throttle, rather than just flattening the pedal when the turbo kicks in.

Also, according an article in a recent Street Machine mag (I'll have to find it again and post it here, it's very interesting), running BP Ultimate -98 Octane -with Nulon Pro Strength octane booster apparently yeilded higher power outputs than Avgas.

I will have to see what they have at the track for race fuel. Is it ok to use ice bags on the charge tube to cool the engine down?

Not in the 924. I do treat my '03 Grand am that way though.
I broke the clutch for about a year after buying it new.
But hey it's a new GM, they're worthless anyway.

Unless you are pinging on 93, anything higher will provide no additional power unless you advance the timing.

When running stock boost and timing settings, all a US 931 needs is 87 octane (owner's manual).

My only concern would be tire hop. If it starts doing that the shift linkage may could let go. Speaking from experience.

I run mine to red line often, and occasionally laydown a patch. But I never dump the clutch or do burn outs.

I've yet to lay any black down or spin the tires. I redline a few times a day hoping on the expressway and ripping up the curvy hills in the valley. I love hearing my little N/A roar at 5,000 and up with the glasspack on it heh.

I'm not going to abuse the car to any unreasonable extent. Go to the track run 2 time trials and race til I get eliminated...

Im doing this because I want a strip car, and for you guys, to show you guys this car can be a drag car..

I wont be doing burnouts, and clutch dumps...
