okay , more messing with the 931 today, started to RIT dye the rear hatch carpeting. it was sun faded almost gray, and its supposed to be black. the pics are poor, but this shows before and after (half dyed) , sorta:
then after spraying. i mixed the rit and applied it using an old pump spray bottle, which fell apart halfway through the job (use a good bottle for this, and get good gloves):
then i had an idea. i had a leftover 928 tool tray laying around, so i built a few brackets and secured them to the top half of the back seat:
and now i have a built in tool tray, sans tools, i let those go with the 928, but ill find some hazets someplace or something else thatll fit eventually:
once i pick up some more dye ill even the coloring out a bit, but its not as bad as the picture looks... BTW:if you use a brush while its wet, itll cover better and not stiffen up the rug as it dries. i used a dust pan brush with nylon bristles, worked perfectly. _________________ Eric

I'm pretty sure a PO of my car used that same technique. Only the rugs are sorta stiff where they haven't worn over again. I don't know if it's just the method they used, but it seems to rub off on stuff you put in the hatch area on the carpet, in mine atleast. They also sprayed the dash and leather trim, headliner, door panels, buttons, vents, console and all...quite an undertaking to go from brown to black but hey, I like it better than if it was brown. _________________ Mike

the trick with the rit dye is to apply it hot (you need to heat the water before adding the dye, and a bit of salt, and cook it a few minutes) , then scrub it into the carpet after sprayin it on, so you get full coverage and absorbsion. scrubbing it in will also limit the fibers from sticking together, and prevent the "crunchy" carpet problem. then let it dry completly a day or two, and wipe the rug down with an old cotton towel to remove the residue. then repeat the process again if necessary, some times it take two or three applications to get it the proper shade .
If your changing colors, you should use the color "remover" first, rit also sells that, not sure of the proper name, but it preps the material for the color change.
I really like the way the 928 tool tray came out. originally i was going to try and use it on the rear lip, where it lives in the 928. the problem there was the rear tire hump. in order to make it work there, there would of had to have been some serious mofification to the unit, and it would of reduced its function severely. relocating it tot he rear of the back seat made more sense. id still like to build end caps for it. it doesnt show in the pic, but there are gap[s on each side which i dont like. endcaps cut to fit will be the solution there, and tie it in a little better. but its not bad as is, and i like the ideaof having an organized tool tray rather than a box or bag sitting in the wheel wells. theres also space in it for small amount of suplies, like fuses or a baggie of electriical connectors or something.
next up is permanently mounting my cd changer, i think itll live in the right side wheel well, but im still undecided about that.. _________________ Eric

The 928 tool tray was simply inspired! I love it, great idea, and good execution from the looks of it. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

This would be a good job for mid summer since it's supposed to be done hot. Apply the stuff hot and brush it in, then close the hatch, park it in the sun and let it cook. _________________ "..it's made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff."

lol, im in florida, "Warm" isnt an issue here, i think it was almost 85 when i sprayed the carpet the other day...but in cooler areas you could use a heat gun or even a blow dryer to help set the dye. once you get it to "set" you just wipe it down with an old cloth to remove the excess dye that hasnt absorbed.
do this every couple of days for a week or two and thatll l pretty much end any worries about getting dye stains on anything. ive got another hatch carpet(big spare tire hump) i did this way a few years back, this process worked like a charm..still looks pretty good too, i trip over it once a day in the garage... _________________ Eric
