|
|
I need more bass and I dont want to get a subwoofer. Im aiming for the stock interior look and dont want all the clutter thats involved with a subwoofer. I'm looking to install speakers larger than 4x6 in the rear. Any info on how much modifications needed to install 5x7? 6x9? 5"? or 6"? _________________ 1988 924S |

Supposedly a lot of these later cars came with a plate covering a ~6 inch hole where the stock speakers are located (upgraded sound option). The only way to know for sure if your car has it is to take the rear panel off.
I have 6x9 speakers installed in the corners of the hatch, facing upward. They don't really project to the front like I want them to so I'll either be making or having someone build a box to fit at the rear of the hatch, facing up/forward soon. |

I still say get yourself a decent, compact powered subwoofer. If you don't want one as gaudy as mine, you can still get a nice tube-style powered 8" subwoofer that you can install in a number of out-of-the-way places. It will make a HUGE difference in the sound and save you the hassle of having to cut out bigger holes to install 6x9s in the rear, which won't give you good bass response anyway. If you insist on going with 6x9s and no subs, the best way to get decent lowend response is to power them with a separate amp. You'll *never* get good lowend response by power strictly off the head unit. So, you add an amp, and your back to adding clutter. That's why I still think a small powered sub is a good option for you.
Mounting options:
1. On the floor between the front pass. seat and the useless rear seat
2. Mount it to the fold-down portion of the rear seat (in the hatch area). You may be surprised how little space this takes up.
3. Put it in one of the cubby holes behind one of the rear tires
4. Remove the spare and put it in there _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

If you don't mind a little surgery w/ a jigsaw, 6x9s fit their with little problem. I would suggest maing an adaptor plate out of 1/2" MDF, to seal the speaker better, but either way the results are good.
BTW, the inside of the rear fenders after the wheel wells make a great place to stuff a pair of 12" subs, if you can do fiberglass. And they look cool their too. _________________ My frequent desire to perform violent acts on select other drivers is not road rage; it is simply preemptory self-defense. |

| Do 944s have bigger pockets behind the rear tires? People on rennlist seemed to have a much easier time fitting amps back there than I had. My amp isn't big, either. Actually it's one of the smaller ones I've seen. |

I fitted a pair of 6" speakers in the rear where the 4x6 speakers go.
A bit fiddly but I have them flush behind the panel and a reasonable sound as well.
A sub would really give it some oomph but I'm 48 next month and anything that makes my heart thump out of tune is a worry. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

Well... I kinda went overkill on the sound system here...
I wish to import the sound system from my Probe into a 931. I have two 500w 10" Pioneer TS-W250R and a 800w GM-7100M Pioneer Sub. I guess I'll just have to throw the subs in the hatchback behind the rear seats (I already have a box for it and I don't wanna spend any more money on another box...) However, where would be a good place for the amp? I don't want to pull out the spare tire, so while that would be a nice spot, I doubt i can stuff the amp in there WITH the tire and jack and stuff.... Any other good locations? I'd also prefer somewhere with air for the amp to breath (so something better than "under the driver/passenger seat" :nice: )
I then plan on getting a hold of two 240w TS-A6880R Pioneer 6" x 8" 4-Way Speakers for the rear.... I don't know what to toss up in the front door panels yet. I might mount a small 300w amp for the pannel peakers under the drivers seat (my 800w amp is mono and power subs only)... just a thought .
Thanks for any advice/imput! _________________ 1993 Ford Probe SE

I finally got around to getting the stereo amps and sub box in the way I wanted. I know it might be a bit too much "pimp my ride" style...but what do you do with a 2800 watt system...can't hide it under your seat.
I have to say...I was not a big fan of the "BIG" sound system...but this one I got off ebay for a song sounds super...like a house stereo in your car.
I did all the vinal and carpentry work....it was a huge job to make this install...like the rest of the car...
I still get the use of some hatch space as well....24 of beer...what else do you need??

this option is relatively "space economical" to add another set of speakers. if i do this again i will experiment with angle wedges, to better bounce the sound off the hatch and push it forward, but flat mounting wasnt too bad (this was done in my 78.)
Im also considering building 968 style pockets (or find a set from a wrecker) for the doors for better sound up front like these:
speakers are mounted under the blackmesh part. i like these because they allow speaker mounts, but still retain some storage space (i actually use mine for things like maps ) im not too thrilled about the top halves though, i like mine better, so i decided against using a late model complete panel.. ill find something inbetween, or build something.. _________________ Eric
