Base MSRP $27,215
Highway Mileage 23 mpg
City Mileage 20 mpg
Seating Capacity 4 passengers

Horsepower 158 hp

A really nice, "mint" condition 88 924S should run you less than $4,100. (kbb Retail Value)

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on any of this guys...

A little more background information...

The 924S was introduced as a 87 model in the U.S. and as a 86 model in the Rest of the World. The 87 Introductory price in the U.S. was 19,995.

By the end of middle of 1988, the 88 924S was going for $35K, and the 944 was going for about $43K. Any doubt about what killed it?

Hp output was fairly high for 2.5L displacement at the time, and the 2.5L engine came pretty much optimized. 158hp output in 1988 was a "world engine" (all engines in all world markets spec'd at the same output). There is very little easy addition hp to be extracted without major surgery, and an injection of BIG BUCKS.

The 944 engine has an almost flat torque curve meaning that almost 80% of engine torque is developat at low rpm and is available all the way to rated redline. There isn't any "boost" power surge like you get in a turbo car, so it will "feel" slower, although if the driver uses the gears properly, should be able to easily outrun a stock 931 from a stoplight.

The clutch and transmission will not take much abuse. If you modify the engine to increase HP output you will need to make other EXPENSIVE changes to avoid breakdown/failures.

If you try to treat the 924S or 944 as a stoplight car, you will be breaking parts, and they are not fast that way anyway. If this what you are looking for, save your money and buy an old 5.0L Rustang.

As with other cars/engines MPG will depend on the driver and driving conditions. Some people get better than the EPA rated 23MPG and many get much less. This is similar to what happens to 931 drivers who cannot keep their feet out of the boost. 924S/944 engine rated output (147-158) is very similar to 931 hp rated output (143-154).

It is very easy to pay too much for a 924S or 944 that looks good or fair, that will cost more to repair than it can be sold for. The cars can be purchased cheap, unfortunately, that is the only cheap part of owning one of these cars. Parts are still expensive. You will not get a TRUELY MINT 924S for less than $4100. You can find some real nice cars for less than $4100, and priced from $5,000-$10,000 is where you will find the better cars. I have seen some cars offered for sale at $8000-$10000, and those are the MINT CARS.

Perfect Original Mechanical and Physical Condition are what determine whether a car is worth the premium price. If you are just looking for a driver, don't pay the premium. If you are a Collector who is going to drive the car sparingly, and looking to preserve a premium car's extra value, then that is where you should be looking.

Keep in mind that no matter what price range you are looking at, the cost of maintenance is going to be close to the same (averaged out to about $1,000-$1,250 per year, including saving for the "front of engine service" which must be performed every 30K miles or three years). This take into account the cost of parts and labor (assuming you going three years between services, and including oil changes, and minor parts replacements).
