Well hello all. Its really nice to find a place where people are passionate about 924s.

Im new, obviously, so... be nice.

My first question is does anyone know where I can find a good, reasonably priced, dealer of parts for my '79 porsche 924 sebring edition?

I need a clutch cable, a drivers side door handle and pretty much most of my interior replaced.
Ill see if I can get some pics of my car to show.

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome

There are no cheap places to buy new interior (or exterior parts) for any Porsche. However, there are many authorized Porsche Dealers here in the U.S. that will sell you parts by phone or mailorder at a significant discount from PCNA (Porsche Cars North America) suggest retail prices.

Get a copy of a magazine named Excellence. Many authorized Porsche Dealer advertise they will sell parts at a percentage above their cost, or a percentage off Porsche Suggested Retail. You can also contact your local PCA (Porsche Club od America Region), and ask club members where they buy their parts.

Unfortunately importing parts to Canada is very expensive, as Canadian Customs has a tendency to charge 100% of the value of the items being imported (including the shipping charges) as an Import Tax, effective doubling the cost of anything that you order from the U.S.

I suggested to another Canadian that he might save the cost of shipping and Canadian Customs by ordering the parts delivered to an address on the U.S. side of the border, or driving down into the States, and installing whatever parts you buy on the car, before returning to Canada.

The Sebring Special Edition car had very little in unique parts installed on it. As most Porsche Special Editions go, the package was/is mostly cosmetics, like the stripes and interior finishing. The only rather unique parts that some of the cars used were the four wheel disc brakes, many of the parts which came from the 928. Later cars with four wheel disc brakes shared parts with the 931 and 944 models.

If your car has the optional five-bolt four wheel disc brakes, count yourself among the lucky as you will not have to deal with the monthly rear brake shoe adjustments that the owners of the cars with front disc/rear drum brakes are forced to perform (to avoid having no brakes). If and when the time comes for replacement of the 928 parts in the braking system, if you are not a sticker for keeping the car all original, you might want to consider replacement with the more common and less expense 944 brake parts.

The 79 cars were also different in that they were the first cars offered with the 5-speed Porsche "snail shell " transmission which was only used on normally aspired and 924 cars in 1979, after which the 5-speed transmission used was a modification of the original Audi 4-speed transmission used in the 924 since it's introduction. Unfortunately, this makes parts for your transmission both scarce and expensive when available. The syncros do not take kindly to poor, or rough shifting, and are getting very hard to find as replacment parts. Many "snail shell" transmission are being replaced with the Audi 5-speed when rebuild becomes necessary because of parts availability and cost.

Why don't you just order through a Canadian dealership? That's what I do.

Give Andrew at Weissach (www.weissach.com) a call, 1-800-665-6688 or 604-738-4434 (direct parts line). I live just out of Vancouver on the Surrey/Langley border and when I order parts if I don't feel like driving into Vancouver he puts them on the bus and I have them the next day (usually around $6.00). You will need a credit card. If you are a Porsche Club member you get decent pricing. They will have most of the parts you need (maybe not interior pieces for those I would hunt here or ebay)and if it is not in stock they bring it up usually in a day or two. Good luck.
