Is there an easy check to see if my steering rack needs overhauling or adjustment.?

Raise front of car onto jackstands.

Have two friends each hold one road wheel.

Have third friend inside of car turn wheels back and forth slowly while you watch for any play in the system, , and locate it's origin.
