I purchased a 81 924 na and have several things to fix. I am currently trying to resolve the problem the electrical.
Problems:
1)I can get no hot air out of the vents. Not even warm. Not sure this electrical
2)I can not get the air to go up to the defrosters. Not sure this is electrical
I have tor the dash apart and all the mechanical cables appear to be working. Not sure whats going on here.
3)I can not get the headlights to pop up, however the headlights do come on.
I discovered the relay that plugs into the motor that lifts the lights is missing, and the 4 prong plug that appears to supply power was disconnected. The guy I purchased the car from gave me a bag with 10 relays that go to the car. I then checked the fuse box and noticed I am missing some of the relays. Using the Haynes manual as a reference I am missing #1 Headlight flasher and low beam relay, #4 Extra headlight relay, and #10 Headlight flash changeover relay. How can I reference the relay numbers to the function?
relays I have

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you.

Not all of the relay sockets are used. For instance, the 1981 924 does not use a low beam headlight relay. The related socket is supposed to have a "shorting" bar that was installed by the Factory when the car was built to bypass the relay which was not installed.

You need to get a copy of the 1981 Porsche 924 Owners Manual. Maybe someone on list Board can sell you one, otherwise look on eBay.

You should also buy a copy of the gray/olive colored Haynes 924 Service Manual. Do not buy a copy of the orange covered Haynes 924 Service Manual. It does not have the updated pages for the 1981 model year cars.

The gray/olive colored Haynes manual also has some information scattered through it that is incorrect for later model cars, and lots of mistakes in the printed torque values for tightening bolts and screws.

Now, onto your loose relays....

171959141A Possibly the Horn Relay
171955529
896371
171919091
3219060590 Possibly the Fuel Pump Relay
111953 227 Flasher Relay
32195531A Possibly the Intermittent Wiper Relay
171937503
171919433 Possibly the Buzzer Relay
171906381

The part numbers that you gave me do not match up with the relay numbers that I know from my 81 924. This may be an indicator that the relays that you have may be the wrong ones, but Porsche has changed some of the relay part numbers over the years. and the ones that I cannot identify could be the right realy for some spot in the car and the current part number has changed.

I suggest that you find someone local to you with an 81 924, so you can remove the relays from the other car and compare the part number directly.

I added in bold where some of those are in my car -

171959141A Possibly the Horn Relay
171955529
896371
171919091
3219060590 Possibly the Fuel Pump Relay
111953 227 Flasher Relay turn signals (111953227D in pos.XI)
32195531A Possibly the Intermittent Wiper Relay I have 477955531A in pos.X for the wiper relay. (first 3 digits differ, but that happens..)
171937503 40A - Used for AC system (position I), rear window defroster (pos.VI), plus one unused spare in pos.VIII.
171919433 Possibly the Buzzer Relay seat belt warning (pos.V)

Very often relays with the same digits following the first (3) number are the same relay, but sometimes they are not.

That is why suggested that you find someone close to you so you can compare the relays.

Most all of the relays have a circuit diagram printed on them somewhere. When you find one with numbers that match, except for the first (3) number at the left, you can compare iwth another relay to see if the internal circuits are the same. Also, compare the number of connector pins, and the locations. Similar relays should always have the same number of pins, the same size, in the same location.

Thanks that is very helpful. I checked and there is a bar in the one slot. Thank again, time to start tracing circuits.
