|
|
I'm wondering what engine oil is best to use.
it doesn't get cold here in the winter usually above freezing and in the summer it doesn't usually get over 30 degrees.
I heard 20w50 is what you should use. the previous owner said he put in 10w30.
also what brand oil is best ? or it doesn't matter.
also is it better to use synthetic or half sythetic ?
and another question.
lwhat do I need to change my spark plugs. just a spark plug socket.
I don't get how you gap the the spark plugs... aren't they allready gapped when you buy them? _________________ 78 924 sold.

as for oil, if you change al the gaskets sans head gasket, then run synthetic, if you dont then it will leak, run 10w30 regular dyno oil. brand doesnt matter, but castrol is good.
as for spark plugs, you can get a gapper at lordco for less than $2
get basic copper plugs for your car
the stand you get the gapper out of will have a little pic that shows you how to use it. _________________ 3 928s, |

I thought the titanium spark plugs were better and last longer? _________________ 78 924 sold.

last longer possibly cost more Yep,
better spark, copper is the best from what I have seen, but I have some used NGK iridium 924 plugs if you want them, they dont have many miles on them but will need to be cleaned as they got abit dirty when the headgasket blew. _________________ 3 928s, |

I'm with Tim here, I though they were gapped when you brought 'em. _________________ TJ

Premium plugs like Bosch Platinum are pre-gapped, but I wouldn't recommend them for any carbueretted or CIS-injected engines, only EFI ones. Main reason being that they have much smaller exposed electrode tips, and when they get fouled, the plugs can misfire (or NOT fire) more often.
I would go with a mid-range plug like NGK or Bosch. I'll agree with Lizard on standard copper plugs.
As for engine oil, Porsche says to use 10W30. Depending on the mileage your engine has on it, you may want to go with something thicker so that it is not as easily pushed past seals and such.
I personally use either Castrol Syntec or Mobil-1 10W40 or thicker. _________________ '80 931 FOR SALE

so synthetic won't always leak in the 924 engine.?
my engine doesn't seem to be leaking any oil right now. _________________ 78 924 sold.

I put Castrol synthetic in my NA *before* the top-end rebuild, and have had no issues. I still have the synthetic 10W40 from this winter, but am thinking about swithing to 20W50 at my next oil change (before summer). _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

What if the engine was rebuilt about 5,000 miles ago, what weight would you guys recommend? _________________ Mike

I can't see a rebuild making a difference. Direct from the owner's manual:
| Quote: | | For all year round filling (oil change intervals 7.500 miles/12.000 km) use multi-grade oils SAE 10W-40, 15W-40, 15W-50 or 20W-50. The 20W-50 oil should not be used at constant temperatures below +5F/-15C. The 10W-40 oil should only be used at temperatures below +50F/+10C. |
So my plan is to run synthetic, and to change the oil / filter every 6 months (not putting on that many miles). 10W40 from October to March, 20W50 from April to September. Should be about the same in Akron. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |

Ah ok, synthetic it is. It won't be driven much in the winter at all, I plan to keep it garaged except for when the roads are clear and dry. I'm hoping to be able to keep the salt off of it so it doesn't start to rust at all. Last winter I drove 60, mostly highway miles round trip to work 4 days a week in my truck, in a week after washing it, it was like i never washed it. Sometimes only a day if it was bad. _________________ Mike

The only oil Porsche recommends for all of it's vehicles is 15-50 Mobil-1. That is because it is simply the best. _________________ 1980 924 Turbo |

In an N/A engine I would run regular Castrol. Synthetic is more expensive and just not necessary. I would recomend sythetic in a turbo because of the higher temps. The best thing you can do is make sure to change your oil every 3000 miles. If synthetic makes you feel beter and you dont mind the extra expense go ahead. IMHO it wont make a difference though. _________________ 1981 924 NA

I disagree. I run synthetic in everything I drive. It simply does not break down like dyno. When running synthetic, you might want to change your filter every 6000-7500 miles. However, the oil doesn't break down, so you can just change the filter, and top off the oil, replace all of the oil every 15000 miles. This is much cheaper than doing a dyno oil change every 3000 miles. _________________ erstwhile owner of just about every 924 variant ever made |
