ok, after a lot of sitting....we finally bought a jack. i lifted the car to look under it for a minute and spray a few rusy bolts with WD40 anyways, my father started flicking the fuel tank and we heard a empty sounds. we then looked at the sand under it and picked up a bit to find a slightly wet patch smelling of gasoline. we are going to take the tank out and clean it tomorrow. how many of you guys have done this, what did you do? and what is the part number of the small gasket on the bottom of the fuel tank? anyways, im done with my lazy hiatus and im coming back with the good weather! hopefully my car was not running because of a simple lack of fuel

if you have an audi based tranny where 1st is towards the front end of the car, you must pull the tranny in order to remove the fuel tank

Actually, the 77 audi transmission is not as long as the later audi 5-speed, and you are supposed to have enough room to R & R the fuel tank without disturbing the transmission.

Before you do so, I would locate a replacement fuel tank, and simple exchange the old for the newer. Fuel tanks are relatively cheap and plentiful, and certainly safer to replace than to try to remove and repair your old tank if it is rusted.
