OK, here is the other situation with my/my sons car. The high beam switch that was replaced with a dealer new part in '04 had to come out of the steering colum to pull the wiper switch. The wiper swich had melted from some bad motor wiring and I rebuilt it using epoxy, it now works BUT now the high beams flash on alot. Over every bump and often without any disernable bumps the high beams flash on or come on. I checked out the colum and it looks like I installed it correctly, there is no binding or obvious misalignment. It also is killing the battery in about 2.5 days dependably. I have unplugged and reconnected the steering colum harness several times.
My question is could these two problems be inter-related? Could the high beam relay be continuously energized with the key off and no lamps lit thus draining the battery? This switch is quite expensive and I will re-route those two wires to a seperate button is that is the problem. _________________ The Porsche is now my son's, my car is cooler, slower but cooler. |

Why didn't you try returning the headlight switch under warranty if you bought it from a Porsche Dealer in 04? All Porsche parts include a 2-year unlimited mileage warranty.
Too late now... but the headlight switch is not that expensive, since it is a standard VW Rabbit/Jetta part. Just what do you consider to be expensive?
You should be able to buy a good used one for less than $10 from a Pick A Part salvage yard, or a new one from a VW Shop for less than $30-$35.
What I would do if I were you is replace your damaged switch with another one. You could find that your battery draining problem has been solved, because the switch was not correctly reassembled, or you could find that the problem that damaged the switch in the first place was never repaired, and still exists.
I have found that the proper replacement of damaged or incorrect parts (and a good cleaning) often magically repairs problems without further effort or expense. |

I paid 80.00 for the switch at the Porsche dealer (OK got took, especially since its made in MEXICO) there were none like it at all the PYP yards. I used a VW wiper switch as the P dealer wanted 120.00 for that. Using the VW part kills the washer as it is the air wash from a beetle.
The turn signal/high beam worked fine as this was my daily driver from Bakersfield to Paso Robles for much of the summer '04. When I went home on leave (Sep) I fixed the wiper switch. I think that is what through the beam switch out of whack. I just can't figure out how. Right now I am in Bosnia (there's a Posche 944 out the post gate about 4 KM, hasn't moved in months)and am mostly trying to figure it our before I get to go home so the repair will be quick. (along with the 4 CV joints, AC refill, installing an oil cooler and prepping it for paint.)
Thanks for the insight. _________________ The Porsche is now my son's, my car is cooler, slower but cooler. |
