I was having a conversation with a buddy at the track last week, and he said something that got me thinking. He had just experienced a compression leak in his 951 into the water jacket, so he pulled the head, and found the head gasket intact. This left him doubting his mechanical prowess, and as a result he took it easy on the car at the track (the car is a Lindsey Stage III monster. . .500+ whp).

The condition my friend suffers from is mechanioa, an irrational fear of mechanical failure.

Related conditions and their symptoms follow:

smellanoia - you can smell coolant leaking from any car within a 2 block radius, and wonder if it is coming from your car; same applies to hot or burnt oil smells, and fuel smells; you immediately stop, and passing motorists gape as you bend over your engine compartment, sniffing vigorously

hearanoia - a jackhammer over at the mall sounds exactly like a rod knock; you pull over and check your oil

gauganoia - you worry about variations in temp and oil pressure readings that are not detectable to the naked eye; this sometimes keeps you from sleeping.

turbonoia - your face looks like this:

Any other symptoms you can think of? Potential cures?

Discuss!

Paranoia - You have just bought a car (Normally a Lotus) you know nothing about that has a reputation for blowing up in spectacular fashion with no warranty cover...

Are you paranoid enough?

Markanoia
The fear that every new member to the board is out to rip you off.

Nemaphobia
A genuine fear of becoming the next victim.

No I'm not obsessed. Those are (perhaps lame) attempts at self-effacing humo(u)r.

Exhaustion
A Timstar-like obsession with headaches caused by every vague whiff of NOX and CO.

Spares-aphobia
An illogical fear that one will never again ever be able to find used or replacement parts.

PackRat-aphyxia
A symptom often accompanying Spares-aphobia characterized by endless hours of rooting through internet ads on eBay, Craigslist, and other discussion forums. Sufferers of this malady often pay twice the going rate for used parts, and can be identified by garages, basements and attics overflowing with piles of parts they'll probably never actually use on any of their cars.

I totally have the last two there, Dan. And the first two? They crossed my mind, but I left the door open for ya. . .

OK, not exactly a phobia, but this is that prick who ruthlessly takes advantage of 6MBS internet connection, multiple tabs in Firefox, and snipes the best auctions with only 3 seconds to go

Timstarphobia He's gone, but not far enough, you know he's still lurking around like the boogey-man under your bed you know he'll suddenly spring out and scare the living shit out of you!

Auctionaholism....

Uh..guilty. You know it's bad when you just type in Porsche or 924 Porsche in the search not really knowing what you're wanting but are VERY sure you'll find something you think you may need from the 900+ items that pop up.

Don't forget 924boardanoia: fear/anger felt when you try to get on the internet and find that you're having connection problems and you're really wanting to check a response from a thread you posted.

Uhhh....heheh...uhhh...what do you call it when you have several highly targeted advanced searches set up so you can filter out 931 stuff from NA stuff from 924S stuff from 951 stuff from...well, you get the idea...

nice one.

I definetely got some of the mentioned psychodeviations.

It can be cured only by getting another object to catch all your attention and/or selling the current object.

Either way no option
