Hey,
I've had my car for a few months now, and replaced a lot of the typical parts. It drives pretty well. I still feel a little unsure about driving my car more than 10 miles one way. It's got the 4 speed, and cruising at 65-70 yields some fairly high engine rpms. I don't have any definite questions, just wondering how far you guys trust your cars.
Is it okay for me to drive my 4 speed hi-miles engine 30 or 50 miles at a time? Is there stuff that might go wrong that I should go over?

I have only driven my car twice for 10 mins each time and I thought about the same thing. My cars almost ready to drive will probably insure it in a week or two.
i've 4 speed too and my car would get pretty loud at 60-70 mph and at areound 3500-4000 rpm its pretty loud and rough sounding.
It might sound better now , my old muffler had big holes in it.
I think my transmission might be broken because i tried shifting into 4th at 60 mph and the transmission didn't go into gear just made a loud humming sound from the back. _________________ 78 924 sold.

I think the biggest thing you have to worry about is something in the electrical system going wrong or the fuel injection.
you should make sure the cooling system works porperly too and the engine doesn't overheat especially in the summer. _________________ 78 924 sold.

my car is a daily driver. I drive to and from work each day which is a 90 km round trip (60/40, city streets/freeway). I also cruise weekend mornings and usually put on a few hundred km. I have no worries. _________________ 1980 924 turbo |

Mine sits in the garage for weeks at a time. My daily driver is a Dodge Intrepid. I take it out on weekends mostly, but if the wife needs the Intrepid I will drive the Porsche to work whenever necessary (about 25 miles). A couple of times a year I take it for a drive of a couple hundred miles. I have the 5 speed so crusing on the highway at 70 is around 3,000 RPM's. When I drive it I regulary shift around 4,000 RPM's. My biggest problem is some hesitation and surging due to the old CIS that I cant seem to figure out. _________________ 1981 924 NA

one of the issues with the 4 speed, is the high end "whine" , yes it gets noisy, but so long as everyting is in spec, its not a problem mechanically..In fact, if you listen carefully youll also find the engine can sound a bit "off" as well, the 2 liter n/a set up is known for being a noisy bugger on the top end of things.
long, higher speed trips actually are less stressfull than short trips on the vehicle, im rarely concern about a 1,000 mile trip, its the 10 mile trips in stop and go traffic i worry about.. .. my last "big" trip in my 78 included about 2,200 miles, much of that was 70-90 mph highway cruising..that whine becomes music after a few hundred miles.. just keep an eye on your temps, dont red line it too much, and provided the car is in good repair otherwise, you should be fine.. _________________ Eric

that's great. I feel a lot more secure about driving 10 miles to the next town over to go bowling and stuff now. _________________ 1977 Porsche 924 red and READY! |

I picked up my car a month ago, sight unseen. I had the word of the owner it ran ok.
I spent one day on it giving it a service and a once over and then drove it 2500 miles.
Only problems I had was the cooling fan and a heater hose.
The cooling fan bearings were worn out and the heater hose burst because it overheated. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

i've had 924 as a daily driver since 1998 and everyday mileage is app. 100km a day, so far no problems except one in 2001: my '81 924NA's 5spd gearbox had a differential failure, causing me to unleash the half-shafts and call my dad to toe the car back home. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp

I had a '79 NA that looked worse than most of everyone's parts cars, had the famed hot start problem, etc.... I still would have driven that car anywhere, and did.

I've had my '78 (euro) since 2001, put mega miles on it over the years, it's had it's share of breakdowns like any other car but no more than any other car I've owned... If I go out in her I rarely do less than 40-50 miles and more often it's a longish run of around 150. _________________ Mars Red '78 Euro 924 n/a

Any car can have a breakdown. The only thing you should be thinking about is if you can afford to have other people fixing her or not. If you can, go anywhere you want. If you can't stay close to home.
I took my dear car out on a little roadtrip three weeks ago and I ended up in Sofia, Bulgaria before I turned around. (About 2650 kms from home) I had one breakdown, in Prague, and that was the rubberpiece on the passengerside enginemount that failed and two of the bolts that went into the engine snapped. My fault for believing a couple of people who said that the rear suspension was supposed to make noise, because after they fixed things up front she was a lot more quiet. (I had even babied her on the Autobahn and only maxed speed a couple of time chasing a black Cayenne Turbo in "heavy" morning traffic.)
So, if she sounds good, drive her! |

Mine's a 5 speed, but I just got back from putting about 3,500 miles on the car. I was a little concerned as well, but it's just plain and simple a noisy car at high speeds. I did most of the trip at about 80-85 mph and 3900 RPM, not a single issue. Like the others said though, if you have a problem away from home, you're going to get reamed trying to get the thing repaired. _________________ 1987 924S |
