|
|
I just completed repairing my odometer, and I found that my instruments differ from the configuration of the FAQ writer's. For me, the only instrument I could push out was the heat/temp/fuel, with the speedo in the center and the tach all the way over on the right (totally inaccessable from the rear)
Meant I had to stuff my entire arm behind the instrument panel to remove the speedo-tach connection from the back of the tach. My tiny hands finally come in handy. _________________ 1987 924S |

Sounds like standard configuration to me.
Did you try and remove the entire bezel from the dash?
I do this to get better leverage on the back of the instrument. Two screws in top of outer gauge pod. These gauges are going to be stuck in place a bit given the ages of the cars so sometimes it is a tad tougher to get them to pop out. _________________ MJ

Combo guage on the left and speedo in the middle and tach on the right
thats the way I havem I switched the speedo with the tach awhile back and that led to premature speedo cable failure. I replaced the cable with a new one for 25.00 and put the guages back the way there intended to be. _________________ 1979 porsche 924 Na

Removing that tach took me 2 damn hours (Sure the instrument bezel comes forward, like 1"). I can't wait to try removing those panels covering the rear speakers. *SouthBay clears a 16 hour window in his schedule next Saturday*
This board is pretty damn awesome btw. _________________ 1987 924S |

Getting them out is easy. BUT getting them back in is a trial and you'll learn some new adjectives.
The reason is:- the vinyl edging is held in place via the qtr panel window.
If you dont need to remove the panel completely then don't.
Otherwise to refit them properly you need to remove the little window and refit it using cord to get the rubbers in right. Definitely a 2 person, lots of time and patience experience. _________________ Porsche 924 1984 (UK import) NA

| My tach is in the MIDDLE. Much better place for it IMHO. I moved it so I can see it better instead of having to look past the steering wheel. Also, I rotated it so redline is straight up and I can use peripheral vision to see when to shift. Rotated the combo guage too so I can see the temp guage better. I can't see the speedo so well but not sure I care all that much. |

To get the tach out it's easier to remove the steering wheel the the whole instrument cluster come o ut.
My tach is in the middle with the speedo off to the right side of the cluster. _________________ Remember a Porsche is not just for Christmas,

I thought of a reason for the Tach to be at the right; if you drive with your left hand on the top w/ the right shifting, your arm will cover the speedo almost completely.
Just an observation. _________________ 1987 924S Guards Red

I wish I could have the tach there but with 12 speed cameras within half a mile of my house and multiple mobile cameras I need the speedo in my line of site 24/7!

I have tach in the middle on every single Porsche i've ever had. On most of them I had to move it there by myself. Why? Because it belongs there and it looks SOOOOO much better and more Porsche-like.
Joe, speedo cable needs to be re-routed in order to keep it as straight as possible. _________________ '83 924 2.6 16v Turbo, 470hp
