okay, ive been going full steam, and the major dissassembly is pretty much done..right now im pretty much stalled waiting for parts, but im working on some cleanup tasks and smaller things in the meantime..
heres the exhaust, including the turbos(old and "new") and wastegate..the new turbo has already ticked my off royally, after waiting almost a year for it, finally getting it and now finally getting to prep it for install, i find it has a stripped exhaust side stud hole. it looks like it might have been retapped for a larger stud, not sure..but im going to have to helicoil it or have it filled and rethreaded some how..not something you notice until you try and put the proper stud in.. ugh..
heres the head, exhaust manifold off and i was sizing up the mazda top mount ic (with casing removed.) ill have to reposition the inlet and outlets on it..but i was just "playing" with it at this point. that wont be done for ahwile as ill have figure out the hood scoop positioning and decide the new ic mounting points/position based on the id of the hole ill have to cut..
whole car from left rear up on jacks..bad pic, but you see the new rear koni adjustables, and ss brake lines if you look close. youll also notice i take no chances..not only is the car supported by jack stands, but has supplimental supports as well, just in case..
closer pic or rear ss brake line:
Pic from front, strut hanging out, got my BFW (big friggin wrench) yesterday, and hopefully will get those strut caps off today and stick in the new koni red inserts.
yes, the a frames look very rusty, but it seems to be just surface rust combined with road crud..ill be cleaning them up and inspecting them for and serious signs of deep rust, and take it from there..
my home made parts washer, using an oil change pan, and a dollar store stainless steel kitchen colander. i use about a 20% solution of simple green with water..works great. if you want to get fancy you can tap a screen filter and hose to the bottom of the basin, and run tubing through a fish tank power head pump or similiar, with an on off valve to flow the cleaning solution..but just "dipping and scrubbing wioth a parts cleaning brush works just fine for me..
so im getting there, a bit more slowly than id like, but little by little.. right now im waiting on the wastegate diaphram and 1 bar spring, and Vince is getting prices for me for for the very long list of gaskets and hardware i need to put it all back together..once thats done, and shes running again, ill upgrade the cam to the stage two i have here already, then i can concentrate on the body work... _________________ Eric

I spent allot of time getting my list together, 3 pages worth..mostly nuts and bolts and small sealing rings, which should all be replaced when doing a R&R of this nature. at some point after im done ill html the list and stick up on my website..theres allot that you dont find out about until your elbow deep in exhaust rust..
anyhow, my BFW worked wonderfully, pulled the left side strut out and it fell apart in my hand, two pieces on on left, new koni center..... i dont think its supposed to do that . also painted my exhaust manifold with hight temp paint.. right..
and cleaned up the wastegate and pipes a bit..
and heres a pic of the "new" turbo with the bad stud hole (man it ticks me off to no end! )
and a picture comparison of the turbo (left) and N/a springs..
replaced my o2 sensor as well, another good use for the BFW (removing the old one)..and had to chase out the threads as well, still doesnt sit quiet flush, but almost so, and far better than what the old one was :
and the belly pan im cleaning up..dont know if ill use it or not, but ive been chipping the crud off it little by little..
thatll be it for a few days, going to visit a freind..but ill put more up next week some time.. _________________ Eric

The Mazda cooler is pretty easy to fit. If you have the old charge tube you can make a jig to match the cooler up.
I have a Mazda RX 7 unit all setup to fit - only catch is it's located in New Zealand. It used to be on a friends car but he's since upgraded to a 944 Turbo unit.
if you do use a Mazda unit be careful about where you mount the fixing points as the tanks are real thin and with on off boost cycles if the points are too rigid you crack the tanks. _________________ Remember a Porsche is not just for Christmas,
